News from BYM Camps

Rent a Campsite at Catoctin Quaker Camp

To reserve a campsite at Catoctin you can just go to HipCamp.com and search for campsites near Thurmont MD and look for cabins at Catoctin. They will be listed as “Elizabeth’s Cabin (#5) at Catoctin,” or “Tom’s Cabin (#14) at Catoctin,” etc. all named after Friends from Quaker history.
Firefly Midsummer Night's Hike at Friends Wilderness Center
Saturday, July 12

As midsummer's night approaches, fireflies illuminate the Niles Cabin ponds accompanied by an evening choir of frogs. Enjoy an easy, early-evening, family-friendly hike to the treehouse for campfire s'mores before strolling back between the ponds at dusk to dance on the lawn, moved by the magical symphony of sight & sound. News from the Antiracism Discussion & Action Group
Reflecting on Implicit Bias

Our group had its fourth virtual meeting on Saturday, April 24. We discussed how messages of anti-Blackness become internalized and how we can use curiosity and holding space for transformation to confront those messages when they surface in ourselves and in others. Some of us took the Harvard Implicit Bias test to measure exactly how racist ideas affect us.

Our next and final meeting will be on May 22 at 10:30am. We’ll discuss strategies for moving forward and what the process of adopting BYM’s Antiracism Declaration might look like. Friends can learn more about the BYM Antiracism Declaration by watching a recording of a virtual workshop held on April 5. The link is here: https://youtu.be/_Gy_GGoJuaU As always, the group is open to anyone who would like to attend.
Queries, Advices & Voices for May
Education & the Inward Teacher
(from 2013 Faith & Practice Resource Document)

Queries
* How can we most effectively foster a spirit of inquiry with a loving and understanding attitude?
* What effort are we making to be better acquainted with Quaker faith and practices and the beliefs of other faiths?
* Do we take an active and supportive interest in schools, libraries, and other educational resources in our communities and elsewhere?

Advices
Seek for ourselves and for our children the full development of God’s gifts, which is true education. Education continues throughout life; our communities are strengthened when we all share its opportunities and privileges. Be ready at all times to receive fresh light from whatever quarter it may come; approach new theories with discernment. Education not only fosters individual growth, community responsibility, and a knowledge of God’s world, but also a sense of wonder at continuing revelation in this changing universe.

Voices
“How is the Inward Teacher known? In joy and health, but also in loneliness and alienation; in the deepest encounters with other people, and in dialogue with great ideas and works; in love but also in emptiness; in hunger but also plentitude; in solitude but also in community. Wherever we are is the starting place for encountering the voice which can speak to our condition. We cannot compel the inner voice to speak, we can only try to practice openness and attention, and when we hear the voice we can only practice minding and answering.” -Paul A. Lacey, 1988

“There is your teacher, the light, obeying it; there is your condemnation, disobeying it. If you hearken to the light in you, it will not allow you to conform to the evil ways, customs, fashions, delights, and vanities of the world.” -George Fox (1624-1691)

“Look not out, but within… Remember it is a still voice that speaks to us in this day, and that it is not to be heard in the noises and hurries of the mind; but it is distinctly understood in a retired frame.” -William Penn (1644-1718)

“I have found that the more I enjoy living, the more I learn to lift up my heart, the easier it is to accept life cheerfully, because it means living from the deep joy of inward peace. But the price is to feel the pain of the world more acutely.” -Margaret E. Wilkinson, Australia, 1978
