Photos are another (ahem, obvious) part of visual storytelling.

In a world where attention spans are short and using minimal text is key, a stock photo is often be the best way to convey a feeling or communicate a message.

While we all hate it when PowerPoint presentations are chock-full of text, it’s also just as big of a bummer to see a group of sterile, smiling colleagues with perfect teeth high-fiving around a staged office.

Stock photos can be BAD. And bizarre. Like, REALLY BIZARRE.

But there are alternatives to the mega million archives of iStock or Shutterstock. There are also strategies to searching and design tricks to uniquely brand any stock image.

STOCK ME UP, Mick! Now presenting the STOCK IMAGE edition of Pitchin’ Ain’t Easy.

On The Blog: Let's STOCK about it.

Even mundane stock imagery can be made uniquely YOURS and branded with a few helpful design tricks. What might be a generic image at first download has the capacity to transform into something truly memorable. #GhostRanchSuperCool

How to find the image you've been searching for

Finding "The One"
Searching for the right stock image is hard. According to my designer team, it can take hours of their day. But when you find the right person—I mean, image—it's worth the effort.  (And the client feedback!)

A few tips, outlined further in this stock-searching BIBLE of a Copyblogger post:
  • Flawless vs. fake. Find relatable people in real-life situations. In other words, avoid models grinning at the camera!
  • Know the difference between "staged" and "candid". Staged is the aerial view of your eggs benny at brunch; candid is the one your friend snapped with yolk running down your chin.
  • Search for emotions and feelings. Do not type in "KPI" into the iStock search bar.
Get a cooler library: There are an infinite number of photos out there. How are you to find "the one"? It's a lot simpler than most romantic comedy plots.

Here are some great (and FREE!) starting points: BONUS: Freebie video sites! Another reason to love our National Parks Service—they offer hours and hours of free media. Get some grizzly bear action in your slides.

Misadventures in tagging stock images

BEWARE the computer-generated tagging mechanisms of lesser image-sourcing sites. But also, ENJOY!

Do you have a  stock searching strategy we should know about??
Or maybe you've found THE most ridiculous stock image.
Either way, pass it on:
In conclusion: it's fun to laugh at ridiculous stock imagery.

But it's WAY more fun to have a fresh, modern, and unique image that will convey a message, a feeling, and all 1000 words a picture is worth. :)
