FAR Outreach Stories: An Artsakh Soldier’s Wife and Family
Marina Balayan is a mother from Artsakh who calls her small dorm room in Yerevan “home” for now. She and her three children, her mother, and her mother-in-law have been sharing the space for more than two months.
Marina’s husband Hayk (age 38) was serving as an anti-tank battery commander in the army of Martuni, Artsakh, when he was injured in October. He has been in coma ever since, at a hospital not far from Marina and the others.
The family had previously enjoyed a peaceful life in Martuni, where Marina worked as an elementary school teacher. Currently, Marina tries to organize her kids’ days in Yerevan. She is glad that Ovsanna and Edgar are now in school; but Erik is still reluctant to go back. Overall, she remains uncertain about her family’s future. “I just want Hayk to recover. That’s all I ask God for,” she said.
The Fund for Armenian Relief is assisting Marina—and others from Artsakh like her—with shelter, food, education, healthcare, and other forms of support, to help them move ahead to rebuild their lives. To support these efforts, make a donation to support FAR’s work today.
