PRAYER OF THE WEEK
O Lord, send out your light and your truth; let them lead me; let them bring me to your holy hill and to your dwelling. Then I will go to the altar of God, and I will praise you with the harp, O God, my God.
Lord, please keep watch over your faithful people and the holy soil of Arstakh and Armenia, now and always. Grant them strength, and lead us together through the present time of trial.

Sunday of the Judge

The fifth Sunday of Great Lent is called the Sunday of the Judge. The message of the day teaches us with the parable of the widow and the Judge. This parable comes to us in the Gospel of St. Luke (Luke 18:1-8). The parable tells the story of a widow who repeatedly came to a judge, who neither feared God nor respected man, and pled for her rights. For a long period of time the judge refused to act, but in the end, he fulfilled her request, to put an end to her continuous appeals. Otherwise, he feared that she would continue to return indefinitely.

After telling this parable, the Lord assures everyone, that if a man as corrupt and unfair as this judge decided in favor of the widow, then God surely would judge in favor of his own people and grant the requests of all those who submit to Him through prayer. This parable exhorts us to always and continually pray, as prayer symbolizes the soul’s eternal striving and thirst for God.  The parable also contains an appeal from Christ. After telling the parable, Christ says: “But will the Son of Man find faith on earth when He comes?” In His words, Jesus gives a reference to the Second Coming, and sadness and anguish are felt in the Lord’s remark. It is truly painful for the Savior that many people may be subject to just, yet cruel judgment, instead of becoming the inheritors of the Kingdom of God.

Artsakh Outreach
Artsakh Outreach is the mission undertaken by the Mother See of Holy Etchmiadzin to raise support throughout the global Armenian community, and deliver aid to our brothers and sisters in the aftermath of the recent attack on Artsakh. All money raised through this initiative will benefit individuals and families who have been displaced and are in need of financial support. Donations will provide food, shelter, basic necessities and utilities.

Donors can opt to “adopt” a family or make one-time contributions in any amount. Adoption options include supporting one person at $125 per month; a family of two to four at $220 per month; or a family of five to seven at $275 per month. One-time gifts in any amount are also welcome and will go a long way in supporting this effort. For information, contact Laura Gononian at lgononian@yahoo.com. Please click here to donate.

FAR science classroom

FAR Empowers the Armenian Scientists of Tomorrow

Two schools in the impoverished Berd region of Armenia’s Tavush province have had their science labs renovated and refurbished, thanks to the Fund for Armenian Relief’s “Breaking the Cycle of Poverty” program. The Azatamut and Ijevan No. 1 schools are just the latest to benefit from this far-sighted project funded by the Mardigian Family Foundation.

Azatamut School principal Lilit Avetisyan said that the science lab had been neglected since the end of the Soviet era. “It had a sinister appearance,” she said. “We couldn’t perform any experiments, and consequently our science teachers were only been able to teach theory from the textbooks.”

That has changed with the FAR-sponsored renovation. “Now our teachers use the lab’s full potential, while the children learn through practical experiments.” The new lab has bolstered the students’ enthusiasm for science, she added.

“More than 20 schools in Tavush have been equipped in this way, modernizing the school environments and greatly improving the process of teaching and learning,” said Edik Karapetyan, who heads the educational programs unit of another FAR scientific initiative, the Armenian National Science and Education Fund. “Day by day, thanks to BCPP’s educational initiatives, schoolchildren from Armenia’s vulnerable border communities receive opportunities to learn, do physical activities, and engage in creative work, thus broadening their horizons.”
