Southern Africa Producing a New Crop of Demographers
Universities all over Southern Africa are recruiting and training a new crop of demographers! Below is the Wits recruit for 2018. 
The Demography and Population Studies (DPS) Programme at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg,
enrolled 11 Honors Students and 12 Masters Students for the 2018 Academic year. DPS students will  explore a selection of courses from the the following; Introduction to Population Studies, Demographic Methods and Concepts, Statistics for Demographic and Survey Analysis, Demography of Fertility and Reproduction, Health Demography, Migration and Spatial Demography and Epidemiology.

AFIDEP APPOINTS PROF NYOVANI MADISE
The African Institute for Development Policy (AFIDEP) is a proud to announce Prof Nyovani Madise as the new head of the AFIDEP Malawi Office and the Director of Research & Development Policy.
Before joining AFIDEP, Nyovani was a Professor of Demography and Social Statistics at the University of Southampton. She studied mathematics and economics at the University of Malawi and later obtained her masters’ and PhD degrees from the University of Southampton. In 2016, she received an honorary higher doctoral degree (DSc) from the University of Aberdeen in recognition of her research. Nyovani has previously worked as a Lecturer at the University of Malawi and as a Senior Research Scientist at the African Population and Health Research Center in Kenya. continue reading here.
Stats Bots Partners with African Comprehensive HIV/AIDS Partnerships (ACHAP)
Statistics Botswana (SB) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with ACHAP to formalize and solidify their partnership in January 2018. The signing on behalf of SB was done by Statistician General Ms. Anna Majelantle (pictured above right) while Acting Chief Executive Officer for ACHAP Mr. Lesego Busang (pictured above left) signed on behalf of ACHAP. The MoUw hich provides an overarching framework to encourage collaboration between the agencies articulate the principles by which jointly supported activities might be developed and executed. The partnership will also improve data sharing protocols between ACHAP and SB as well as improve collaboration in secondary data analysis.

The collaboration will further look into the following: Technical assistance; statistical capacity building; research; innovative data processing; monitoring and evaluation; and data dissemination for the production of quality official statistics and informed policy and decision making.

Furthermore, the collaboration contributes to the efficient and effective monitoring and evaluation of National Development Plans (NDPs), national priorities and international frameworks and provision of official statistics through data sharing.

Bureau of Statistics Lesotho Disseminate Capacity Building plan
The Lesotho Data for Sustainable Development  Project,
an initiative funded by EU and UNDP on the 13th December, 2017 supported the Bureau of Statistics Lesotho in disseminating the Capacity Building Plan. The Capacity Plan is geared towards addressing challenges and gaps identified in the National Statistics and M&E Systems. The Capacity Building Plan was informed by a series of assessments conducted with support from the Project namely diagnostic assessment; gap analysis;  and user satisfaction survey.

In attendance were over 25 government ministries, departments and agencies including academia. This initiative was viewed as a great strategy to building a strong National Statistics System which in the long run will lessened duplication. The Capacity Building Plan offers interventions that will be rolled out during the life cycle of the Project and beyond. 
UJ ACE Launches African Evidence Leadership Award 
The Africa Evidence Network (AEN) at the University of Johannesburg (UJ) is launching the first annual Africa Evidence Leadership Award, to recognise and honour people who have raised the awareness of evidence-informed decision-making (EIDM) in Africa. The aim of the award is to showcase the status of Africa in global EIDM discussions by recognising impactful, insightful, and innovative engagement with EIDM in Africa. Both research evidence producers and users of research evidence such as civil servants are eligible to apply for the award, valued at USD4000.  For more information, click here.
Training & Capacity Building Workshops
Centre for Statistical Analysis & Research will host the following workshops during the firstly half of the 2018; Data Analysis using Stata, Inferential Statistics & Multiple Regression, Quantitative Research Methodology, Survival Analysis, Data Interpretation and data use for HIV & TB, Monitoring & Evaluation, Data Analysis& Data Visualization & Report Writing.  For more information contact info@cesar-africa.com
Stellenbosch University will offer the following short courses during May and October 2018; Social Surveys, Quantitative Data Analysis using SPSS, Qualitative Interviewing Methods, Qualitative Data Analysis, Programme Evaluation, Introduction to regression analysis using SPSS & Multiple regression and factor analysis using SPSS.
