Countdown to the 2017 Population Conference
The 12th Annual Population Conference will be held at Statistics South Africa, ISIbalo House, Pretoria from the 12th -14th of July 2017. The call for abstracts opened on the 19th of January 2017 and abstract submissions are due by the 31st of March 2017. South Africa hosted the United Nations World Data Forum, 2017
South Africa hosted the first ever United Nations World Data Forum in Cape Town from the 15th- 18th of January 2017. The Forum brought together more than 1000 delegates from over 100 countries discussing the systems in place to gather and analyse data necessary to support the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals. Best student presenter of 2011 Population Conference, Shaakira Choonara, on the rise!
Winner of the Best Student Presenter Award at the 7th Annual Population Conference in 2011, Shaakira Choonara was recently awarded for "Dedication and Achievement in Research" during the 2017 Wits University Health Sciences Research Awards. She has also been nominated for the Women of the Year Award in the Category "Women in Health". Shaakira is a masters graduate of the Demography and Population Studies Programme at Wits and she is currently pursuing her PhD in Public Health at the same university. Africa represented at BRICS Collaboration for Knowledge Exchange in Belarus
Dr Nelly Sharpley (Walter Sisulu University), second from left, was representing South Africa and Africa at "The Contribution of Migration to the Socio-Economic and Demographic Development Conference". Dr Sharpley was funded by the UNFPA office in Belarus to present her paper on "Socioeconomic Problems and Prospects of Migration in South Africa: A Situational Analysis on the Realities on Ground."
The Conference was hosted by the Republic of Belarus and the Russian Federation from 15th -16th November 2016, Minsk, Belarus.
New research on Social Cash Transfers in Malawi and Lesotho
Thandie Hlabana is part of a joint research collaboration project which is aimed at understanding the role of social cash transfers on generation relations and youth poverty trajectories in rural Lesotho and Malawi. Watch this video to learn more about the project.
