SCOSS: an in-depth review
With the first funding cycle well-underway - and if all goes as planned, the second launching this summer, SCOSS has published its first Progress Report. It is based on a formal and thorough review of the pilot project involving the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) and SHERPA/RoMEO. The review was conducted by the SCOSS Board together with representatives of DOAJ and Sherpa/RoMEO.

The report, which we encourage you to download and read-in-full, covers results of the pilot phase (i.e., funds raised), the organisation, process and structure of the initiative; and governance and operational costs, among other topics.

Global member representation grows with Latin America addition of Redalyc-UAEM
Redalyc-UAEM, a scholarly-led initiative based on a public university infrastructure, recently became SCOSS's latest member organisation. The Mexico-based initiative joins the Association of African Universities (AAU), the Association of Research Libraries (ARL), Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the Council of the Australian University Librarians (CAUL), EIFLLIBER and SPARC Europe.

Redalyc was established 15 years ago on the founding idea that “science that cannot be seen does not exist.” Largely funded by the Autonomous University of the State of Mexico (UAEM), Redalyc is an academic project of innovation and technology for the publishing ecosystem and is run by the research group “Difusión y divulgación de la ciencia”. Its aim is to ensure the visibility and strong position of Latin American academic publications primarily within the Social Sciences and Humanities. Parallel to the thinking behind SCOSS, the intent behind Redalyc is for it to function as a system financed by the community it serves.

Redalyc's involvement with SCOSS is in line with its stance that universities, research centres, researchers and funders must act to address the challenges within the academic publication ecosystem to counter the control of a handful of dominant commercial publishers.

SCOSS gains three new consortia funders
Thus far for 2019, SCOSS has gained the support of three new consortia: UK Jisc Consortium, with 29 of its institutions pledging; the Consortium of Swiss Academic Libraries, which represents 16 libraries and the Swiss National Science Foundation; and the University of California, which has nine campuses. Collectively, their commitments total 423,000 Euros.

DOAJ reaches its funding target
Last month, 18 months after kicking off its fundraising programme, the Directory of Open Access Journals (DOAJ) reached its funding target to cover the service's operational costs as outlined in its SCOSS application. Eight consortia and 175 institutions/organisations from 18 different countries have committed support to DOAJ.

Call for participation
Please contact SCOSS if you are interested in receiving more information on how your organisation or consortium can pledge sustainability funding to our supported Open Science infrastructure services. Also, consider reaching out if you are interested in participating in SCOSS governance and processes. We have some spaces available on the SCOSS Advisory Board if you are a national consortium contributing funding to a SCOSS recommended service.

Status update on 2nd Funding Cycle
Near the end of 2018, SCOSS announced a call for expressions of interest for services that would apply for funding; 38 applications were received. Following an initial review, six were invited to apply and all six completed the application. The SCOSS Advisory Board has reviewed the applications which will move to a full Board review in June. If all goes as planned, the community appeal for SCOSS funding will begin in the summer of 2019.
