Honoring the Service of Vice President Emeritus and Business Agent John Latta…

At this month’s General Membership meeting, the Orange County Professional Firefighters Association Executive Board recognized the tireless dedication of Vice President Emeritus and Business Agent John Latta.

John has served on the Local 3631 Executive Board since its inception on April 10, 1995.  He was a founding member of the 1994 steering committee which created Local 3631 and became independent from Los Angeles County Local 1014.

John was a true trailblazer serving as our first PAC Chairman and laying the groundwork for our successful political action for years to come.  He also served as an effective employee r
epresentative and was part of the first negotiation team that obtained a fair contract for our members.

Additionally, John played an important role in eliminating a large portion of the Paid Call Firefighter Program to create career firefighter positions.  In 1997, he worked on AB 355 to provide transfer between PERS and OCERS retirement systems for firefighters and law enforcement. After the loss of Tom Wall to a heart attack in the line of duty, Tom’s family was denied public safety officers’ benefits (PSOB). Seeing this injustice, John fought hard to get cardiac related deaths recognized under the PSOB and signed by President Bush in 2000.

When John retired from the Orange County Fire Authority as a Captain, he was the Vice President of Local 3631 and received emeritus status. As of May 1st, he resigned as Business Agent for Local 3631. During his over 20 years of service to Local 3631, our membership benefitted greatly from his experience and historical knowledge.

Thank you, John, for your sacrifices and for your continued commitment to the members of Local 3631 and Firefighters across the nation.  We wish you many happy years enjoying your retirement.
