News from Around the Region

Cheltenham Water Polo U15 Girls Success

A dedicated team of 10 girls travelled to Manchester Aquatics Centre last month to take part in
Swim Englands U15’s National Age Group Water Polo competition. For some of the girls this was
their first taste of a national competition, taking on the best water polo players from around the
country in such prestigious surroundings.
Very much the unknown underdogs of the tournament Cheltenham showed they were serious
contenders early on beating Watford 5-3 and Otter Futura 9-0. Their only defeat was to City of
Sheffield, the eventual winners, which meant they came second in their group table.
The highlight of the whole tournament was the semi final victory over London Otter. The team
really pulled together and showed true grit and determination against this power house of a team.
A shock 5-3 win to Cheltenham meant they faced Sheffield again in the final. The very tired girls
put up a good fight but in the end lost again 14-3. However this secured their silver medals, the
only medals a Girls NAGS team has ever won at Cheltenham Water Polo Club, the only medal a
Cheltenham junior team has won in many years at national level. Coach Rich Middleton said “The
girls played amazingly, the defining moment was the win over Otter which no one predicted could
happen. Bring on next year when hopefully the success will continue.”

SW Snapshot: County Development Days

The Regional Club Development Committee have been trialing Volunteer Development Days. So far Cornwall and Dorset have organised and run successful days, Somerset are looking to run something soon and we are looking to roll these out across the Region.
At the recent Dorset Development day a variety of topics we covered, these included:
  • Funding
  • Young Volunteer Workshop
  • Safeguarding
  • Running a club
  • Governance
  • Time to Listen
  • Team Manager
Around 20 people attended each individual workshop which were very well received.
