WELCOME TO AUGUST BOMBERS!
THE HEAT IS ON!!!
Welcome to August my friends, it's been a really good summer thus far. July was a pretty exciting month for us. Here's a recap.
We had a meeting on the road at Aston Abbey Brewing Co. I'd like to thank Chuck McKenna for hosting us and taking the crew on a tour of the brewery. It was a lot of fun.
We had a group brew day for the Keystone Big Barrel Brew Competition. A big thank you to everyone that made it out! As always your help is greatly appreciated.
Our holiday quad (aka Bruce's quad) has made its way into a Dad's Hat barrel to soak up all that oak and whiskey goodness for us to enjoy at the holiday party in December. Thanks to everyone involved with that. Can't wait to try it!
And last but certainly not least was our Summer Brewery Bus Tour to Philly. We visited 4 Philly breweries on an all day excursion that was fun from start to finish. We need to do this AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN!!! I've added some pictures of this and the brew day below. Check them out.
Now on to August. This month for our meeting we will be back home at The Sterling Pig for a Homebrew 101 meeting. We will be talking about the all so important topic of Sanitation... Products to use, how to use them, why to use them etc. Then we'll open up the floor for questions, so get those homebrew questions ready. And those homebrews! Remember sharing time is happy time! And a great way to get feedback on your homebrew. While at the tasting station please ask about signing the clubs consent form. It's something we try to get every member to sign. Thanks!
Some things in the works are our Summer BBQ/picnic/beerfest. We are tentatively looking to have it the weekend after Labor Day, Saturday the 8th. We will post and send out invites as soon as we lock in a time and place.
We are working on the details of another Delaware Valley Homebrew Community (DVHC) Pro-Am. This will be the second year for this great event. The details- this is a club competition first, where a panel of judges from Sterling Pig will choose the best beer to scale up and brew on their equipment. You will then compete against other breweries/homebrewers from across the Delaware Valley. Start planning those brews! This is a very exciting event, last year Sean Mellody won with his "Whiskey Wake Up", an English mild conditioned on Burlap & Bean coffee beans that were aged in whiskey barrels. His beer was also served for a limited time at the Pig. It was tasty!
We are in the early planning stages of a mentor program ("You're the bomb" tbd) . This will be where a seasoned brewer will be paired up with a novice brewer, or anyone really that wants to pair up to gain more knowledge. It will be more of a one on one learning experience. Communicating with each other with questions and answers, getting together for brew days etc. Like I said, we are in the early stages of planning, so stay tuned for more details.
Looking ahead to September. It'll soon be time for another Bombing Run competition. This months style is Oktoberfest AKA Festbier/Marzen. Hope you are ready. It's a tight race. More details on bottle drop offs and times will be posted on our Facebook Group page as we get closer to the event. We are looking into doing another happy hour event for oktoberfests, this time at either The Craft Beer Store or Pinocchio's the week before the meeting Thursday, September 13.
Something I haven't talked about in a while(or at all, my bad) is The Bomber of the Year award. This is an award given to a member that has gone above and beyond to participate and help out when needed with events, meetings, set ups, clean ups, brew days you name it. Last years award was won by Jesse Fast. He walked away with a pretty sweet custom mash paddle among other things. Winner will be determined by the board and awarded at the holiday party in December. Who will it be this year? Maybe you! Good luck!
We, the board, are still working out the details on many things. But rest assured, when we know, you'll know. Most of the up to date info can be found on our Facebook "Group" page. It's also a great way to communicate with other members, ask questions, post brew days, or just share cool stuff with others.
Also don't forget to check the bottom of this newsletter for upcoming events. And remember to take advantage of those members only perks like the Bomb of the Month discount at Brew Your Own Beer in Havertown or the "anytime happy hour pricing on growler/crowler fills at The Sterling Pig.
If your not a member yet you're missing out! One last thing, if you are a member of, or are planning on joining The American Homebrewers Association, please remember to put down The Band of Media Brewers as your homebrew club. It helps us out as a club. Thanks!
And as always, CHEERS!!!
PS. That's a hell of a lot of words! Sorry Mike K. Lets see if you read this far...LOL!

August Club Night- Homebrewing 101 / Sanitation
Aug 16, 7pm at Sterling Pig Brewery
Some have said we don't talk homebrew enough, so we are starting a new type of meeting. Homebrew 101. Where we will talk about a specific subject and answer questions and really just talk homebrew. First up will be where we should all start, sanitation. If it isn't clean it won't be good. (Usually). So bring those homebrews to share, pull up a chair and get your knowledge on! See you there! CHEERS!🍻

DID YOU KNOW?
The beer can was invented in 1935! The iconic vessel that many of us consider to be a staple of the beer industry isn't even 100 years old yet. The first versions of the beer can required a church key to puncture a hole into the "flat top" beer can.
