it is necessary that there is a place of inner silence and peace,
not the peace of more relaxation
but the peace of inner clarity and love."
~ Thomas Merton

First Day School is Open!

For the younger children, ages 0 through kindergarten, the Nursery opens from 10 a.m. to 11:30 each Sunday in the white house.

Children in 1st through 5th grades worship with their families (and all of us) from 10 to 10:20 and then go to their classes with their teachers.

We are still looking for one paid worker and one volunteer for the Nursery.  Here is the job description for the paid position.  Otherwise, our classes are fully staffed!

Coming Right Up

First Friday Film Discussion

October 7 at 7:00 pm

Please join the discussion of the critically acclaimed film Killer of Sheep available on Kanopy streaming platform. Find out more about the film here.  The film builds on vignettes from the life of one man, a slaughterhouse worker in Watts (Los Angeles), to create a mosaic of an austere working-class existence, in which the key figure feels unable to affect the course of his life. This is the recurring link for the film discussion group.

Poem as Portal

Saturday, October 8, 2022 from 10 to noon

on Zoom

"What you seek is seeking you.” ~ Jalal-al-Din Rumi

Friends create a space in which whatever we are seeking may find us.  We take a single poem where we need it to go, and from that new perspective discover what had been hidden.  Join thoughtful, respectful seekers in new explorations, and share in the harvest.  If you are not already on Judith Goedeke's monthly mailing list, contact her through Breeze to receive this month's poem, queries, quotes and Zoom link.  Everyone joining in should bring a journal or other materials to use during time for quiet reflection.  You are warmly invited.

Meeting for Worship for the Conduct of Business

Sunday, October 9 at 12:15 pm

This is where we gather in the presence of Spirit to address issues within our community and beyond.  Your presence is important.  Please read and reflect on the agenda and the documents available here.

Peace Testimony

A Continuing Quaker Education Series

Last Sunday the Continuing Quaker Education team provided an overview of this year’s topic: the many aspects of our lives impacted by our Peace Testimony.  Michael Levy presented different historical perspectives and ventured into some of the rich questions we encounter everyday.  If you missed it, here is a recording of the presentation

AFM Fall Work Day

Saturday, October 22 from 10 am to 4 pm

Friends of all ages are encouraged to come and share the joy of working with your hands, taking care of the grounds, and enjoying the fellowship of the day!  We need many hands to do these tasks:

  • Power washing stairs, walkways and plastic playground equipment
  • Cutting back brush with clippers, pulling ivy off trees with gloves
  • Trimming bushes with hand tools
  • Edging sidewalks with weed whacker
  • Raking and sweeping driveway
  • Picking up sticks, trash and moving wheelbarrows around
  • Fence repair
  • And more!

New! Kids can get up to 2 SSL hours. Under age 14 should be fully supervised by parent/guardian.  Ages 14 and over can be supervised by House and Grounds committee member.

There will be a potluck lunch as usual!  Bring a dish to share if you feel so inclined.  If you have any questions you can contact Patrick Mulvey through Breeze.

Friends Community School Announcements

... are here. The school is having its Fall Fair in person this year, Sunday, October 16 from noon to 4 pm. The fair will include raffles, games, activities, and food. The Fall Fair takes place each October and is run by the Parent Association to share fall-themed fun, and to raise funds for the Wish List which supports teacher-requested activities. See all the information here and get ready to buy your pumpkin!

Supporting Spiritual Gifts Informed by Oppression

This Friends Journal article, by Thistle Hofvendahl and Diego Navarro, provides thoughtful insight for Meetings to open more readily to the spiritual gifts of those who have suffered from one or more forms of oppression.  These Friends’ offerings and perspectives may differ from others’ and can deeply enrich our Meetings.

Learn - Advocate - Act

From the New Adelphi Climate Action Group

Our group has just started up, and as part of our early work we plan to focus on educating ourselves and the community.  We have the intention of taking action, both personal and Meeting-wide, toward solutions.

And by the way, we are still open to new members.  If you are interested, please contact Ruby Steigerwald or Carole Hoage, via Breeze, for more information.

Our first request is that each of you familiarize yourself with the 2007 Sustainability Minute passed by our Meeting.
