How We Do Our Current Meeting Life

Silent Announcements How-To

Silent Announcements will be coming to your e-mail box on Tuesdays and Fridays around noon. If you would like to have something included in Silent Announcements, please use this link and submit something by 10 a.m. on Tuesday or Friday.

Zoom How-To

On Fridays, we'll include current instructions on how to connect by Zoom for our after-meeting gathering.  The Zoom links may change from week to week.  If you are having difficulty connecting through Zoom, please call (don't e-mail) Reuben Snipper or Mackenzie Morgan.  Their phone numbers are in Breeze.  Keep them handy in case of tech problems.

Sunday - Meeting(s) for Business

Next Sunday April 19 at 12:30 -- following our After Meeting time

From our Clerk:  Our Monthly Meeting for Worship for the Conduct of Business will be preceded by an efficient Corporation Meeting for Friends Community School, beginning at 12:30 pm., after our gathering.  Food may be brought to these events but potluck is in your own kitchen.  (If you are like me, you really miss the lovely fellowship we usually have after Meeting for Worship!).  At this point the agenda is not long -- about four items.

Committee clerks, if you have an item for the Business Meeting, please send it to Carole Hoage by Wednesday evening.

"No-Contact" Handling of Meeting Expenses

Treasurer Reuben Snipper reports that Adelphi now has a credit card that the treasurer can use to make purchases for Meeting, especially online ones. It is much easier for you, since Meeting pays directly.

Please contact the Treasurer,, ahead of time, so we can set this up. It is quite quick and easy.

Friendly Eights

Sign up now

It's important to keep in touch and support each other, even as we're far apart. One of our experiments is to create virtual small groups -- echoing the pot-luck style groups we've had from time to time at Adelphi.  You can sign up to participate in one of these groups -- and you won't even have to think about what to bring to a shared meal!

How to do it?  Check the listing here to find a group that will be meeting at a time that works for you.  Send the convener a message, and the convener will take it from there. (You can also find this page in the "Hub" on the website if you lose the link.)

The Library Committee Will Bring Us Books!

The library committee members will support Friends with books and pamphlets from AFM's library collection. Given the need to shelter in place and physical distancing, a library committee member will drop the book in a bag at your doorstep or some other location agreed upon.
You can view the online card catalog via LibraryThing and/or ask for suggestions from the library committee.  A library committee member will go the meetinghouse and retrieve selections. They will make sure to take the necessary measures to protect themselves and the book recipient.  Materials will not be returned until we are sharing worship at AFM together again.
To request books or help in choosing one, please email Diana Rutherford (contact information in Breeze) who will coordinate with committee members to fulfill your spiritual reading needs.  Library Committee members are Diana Rutherford, Judith Mulvey, David Castillo, Samantha Magrath.

Needed:  A House to Rent

The Schwenke/Lucas family (Christine, Chloe, Ian and Audrey, plus pets) are currently renting a home in Silver Spring, but our lease is soon up. We are looking for a 2-year unfurnished rental house in the Silver Spring area, starting either June 1st or July 1st. We are seeking 4 bedroom, 2.5 bath home, ideally with working fireplace and off-street parking.

Ways to Help

Support for Day Center at University Christian Church

Lunch for individuals who are homeless in Prince Georges County is still being provided at UCC during the coronavirus crisis.  Through Peace & Social Concerns, Adelphi will offer bag lunches on Thursday May 7.  Please help us supply 40 bag lunches, consisting of a sandwich, fruit or fruit cup, nuts or chips, bottled water, and dessert.  We’re looking for eight volunteers to provide five lunches each.

Lunches can be dropped off at UCC, 6800 Adelphi Road, Hyattsville, MD 20782, at 1:00 PM on May 7. Please reply to Lynn Hardesty (address in Breeze) as soon as possible to let us know you can help.

Food Assistance

St. Camillus Food Pantry needs help, as many more people are coming for food.  You can donate through the Pantry's  GoFundMe  or drop off items when the Pantry is open,  Fridays 3-5 pm and Saturdays 10-noon.  More information available at

Making Masks

Holy Cross Hospital would like to receive homemade masks.  They have published criteria for the masks they can accept (size, material, etc.) Masks can be left in blue bins in front of the hospital. Simple instructions for making this type of mask are available on (Especially the video.) Note, the hospital's criteria do not require filters in the masks. This website also includes (a massive number of) references on the science of masks, what they prevent and what they don't.

The CDC also provides some very simple ways to make masks for yourself -- without sewing at all!

Are there other organizations that are looking for masks?

Quaker Chanting

Carole Hoage recommends new CD of chant called “Wellsprings of Life", by Pauletter Meier. Meier, known as the "Quaker chant woman," presented at the Baltimore Yearly Meeting Women's Retreat a few years ago. The CD and all of the chants are available online at for listening and purchase. Her previous CD called Timeless Quaker Wisdom” is  available for listening at the same website. Meier takes traditional and beloved sayings of our Quaker forebears and makes a chant of them. Many are helpful and encouraging for this difficult time.

Prophetic Vision and Radical Witness

Wednesday, April 15 at 6:30 p.m. EDT

Join a virtual conversation on "The Future of Quakers" with Marge Abbott of North Pacific Yearly Meeting (former clerk of the Friends Committee on National Legislation) and Liz Nicholson, Southern Appalachian Yearly Meeting, and communications coordinator with Quaker Voluntary Service.  They will explore how Friends deepen a connection to prophetic vision and radical witness in these times of injustice and inequity. Register on line to participate.
Friends Community School's Newsletter - April 10
Baltimore Yearly Meeting has created a web page on impacts of the Coronavirus in Friends meetings, projects, programs and organizations.  The page is frequently updated.  Check here for current information on youth programs, camps, committees and activities.  The yearly meeting in-person gathering has been cancelled.
Find out about    Alternative Games
-- a small business founded by a group of local storytellers and educators, including Adelphi’s own Sam Horne. We run role-playing games like Dungeons and Dragons and, in response to the current crisis, we’ve taken our games online! Read more here.
Veggies for Good Stuart Hean, a former attender at Adelphi, has asked to use our empty facilities to collect produce from farms that suddenly can’t sell their wares due to the pandemic restrictions. He will collect and wash the produce as needed, and then take it to St. Camillus pantry for distribution. If you know of farms or gardens that have no outlet for their produce please contact Carole Hoage or Patrick Mulvey of the House and Grounds Committee, who will pass the information on to Stuart.
