Meditations of the Heart

Chester McCoy shares an excerpt from Howard Thurman's book (pages 185-186)

"I will fear no evil." When I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil because God is with me. And [God's] Presence makes the difference, because it cancels out the threatening element of the threat, the evil element of evil. Of course I may linger or I may die; I may suffer acutely, or all my days may rest upon an undercurrent of muted agony. I shall not be overcome; God is with me. My awareness of God's Presence may sound like magic, it may seem to some to be the merest childlike superstition, but it meets my need and is at once the source of my comfort and the heart of my peace.”

Sherri Mitchell (Penobscot Nation, Maine) writes to her correspondents about cancelling an annual four-day ceremony "Healing the Wounds of Turtle Island:"

"... Mother Earth has confirmed that we are indeed living in the time of prophecy that our elders have warned us about. Now, more than ever, is a time for us to come together and work diligently to live in ways that support the continuation of life for our children, grandchildren and future generations. Please take time each day to connect your feet to Mother Earth and tune in to the messages she is sending us. She is a loving Mother and she will guide us, if we will listen."

Our Virtual Meeting Continues

We will meet again next Sunday -- first for worship in our homes at 10:00, then at 11:00 (via Zoom) we'll connect on-line with each other for vocal ministry that wants to be shared, embracing joys and concerns, and hearing announcements. The specific instructions for the Zoom call will be sent out on Saturday with our second Silent Announcements for this week.

Adelphi Cares

Our Pastoral Care committee invites Friends to fill temporary roles in a group effort called “Adelphi Cares.”  Volunteers in this effort will assist those who are more home-bound, with needs like shopping for groceries or medicines, or providing transportation to appointments, etc.  If you would like to be a volunteer, please contact Wendy Eck (contact info in Breeze.)

Events and Not-Events

Updates in the Quaker world: Baltimore Yearly Meeting provides updates here on closures, cancellations and postponing of events within the yearly meeting.

The 2020 Friends General Conference Gathering has been cancelled. Coordinators are imagining other ways to share and experience the gathering, including perhaps a virtual gathering. Friends General Conference staff and volunteers share their thoughts about the decision and their visioning in this interview with Martin Kelley of Friends Journal.

Virtual Worships for People of Color: Vanessa Julye, coordinator of Racism Ministries for FGC writes that the monthly virtual worships for People of Color hosted by FGC since 2018 will now be available weekly during the COVID-19 pandemic. The virtual worships will be held on Wednesdays at 1:00 pm EDT/12:00 pm CDT/ 11:00 am MDT/10:00 am PDT.

FGC established this practice in response to a request from Friends of Color who participated in a retreat in the summer 2018. “During that weekend, Friends of Color expressed their pain of feeling oppressed in their meeting which caused them to stop attending. These Friends were clear that Quakerism and worship was core to their lives and wanted an opportunity to continue to worship in community. FGC agreed to support these Friends with providing monthly virtual worships on Zoom. These worships are provided as a place for Friends of Color to come together in community and worship in an environment with Friends who experience marginalization in their lives and Quaker meetings because they are a person of Color.  If you identify as a person of Color and would like to join us for our weekly worship, please complete this form:  https://www.tfaforms.com/4812071.”

Committees Can Meet and Quaker Education Can Continue.  The meeting's Zoom account provides opportunities for committees to schedule virtual meetings. Even the Continuing Quaker Education format -- including a presentation followed by break-out discussions -- can be accommodated. Contact Mackenzie Morgan for scheduling and coaching. (Contact information in Breeze.)
Takoma Park Meeting, which is under the care of Adelphi Meeting, has decided to suspend its meetings at the Presbyterian Church until such time as the governor's order is ended.
Prophetic Vision and Radical Witness.  Join a conversation on "The Future of Quakers" with Marge Abbott of North Pacific Yearly Meeting (former clerk of the Friends Committee on National Legislation - FCNL) and Liz Nicholson, Southern Appalachian Yearly Meeting (communications coordinator with Quaker Voluntary Service).  These two Friends will explore how Friends deepen a connection to prophetic vision and rekindle our history of radical witness in these times of injustice and inequity. FCNL is sponsoring this virtual event on Wednesday, Apr. 15 at 6:30 p.m. EDT. Register to attend online via Zoom.
