President's Message

The qualities we look for and from our employees are what we are calling Ausland Attributes. We encourage everyone to embrace and embody these attributes to deliver “world-class development locally scaled to our community.”
The attributes are: being fearless winners, aligned with the Ausland Group vision, enthusiastic and problem solvers. Another quality we’re embracing is MASTERY, meaning we expect nothing less than the best effort from our team and strive to be exceptional in our profession.
As you go through your day, think to yourself how can you embrace these attributes and work toward mastery. Go make it great!

CELEBRATING WOMEN
Ahead of Mother's Day, these roses were passed to ALL the women of Ausland. They are strong, courageous, brilliant and purposeful. Thank you for your contribution to the company and the people in your lives!
As I was thinking of what to write for May’s e-newsletter, the thought of celebrating women came to mind. We reserve a day in May each year to celebrate mothers, but this May I would like to celebrate all women in our company. No matter what your current roles are—daughter, wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt—all of these qualities are special and unique because they are done by beautiful women. While reflecting on the women at Ausland and the women in my own life, here are some qualities I see in them. As you read these traits, think of the women in your own lives and be grateful for them every day, not just on Mother’s Day.
  • Women believe in the power of laughter -Strong women don’t take life too seriously. Instead of being easily offended or mired down in drama, they seek out the positives in tough situations.
  • They are in charge of their own lives - Women know that they don’t need anyone but themselves to decide their path in life. Once they decide what they want, they go for it. On the flip side, women are capable of owning up to their mistakes and are willing to adapt in order to grow.
  • Women have both emotional and intellectual intelligence - There is a lot more to intelligence than just book smarts, and a strong woman has a well-rounded approach to life. Not only can she knock your socks off with her wealth of knowledge, she is in touch with her emotions and capable of controlling them.
  • They are exceptional at communicating - The ability to have a deep, intelligent conversation goes a long way in the eyes of a strong woman. Not only are they skilled at spirited conversation, they are also able to listen and resolve conflicts that arise.
  • They have found their passion – and embrace it! - Passion is incredibly energizing and this type of woman embodies it! Whether it is her career, a hobby, or a cause she believes in, she will do everything she can to explore and grow within her passion.
  • Women are empathetic to others - Empathy is a very desirable character trait, and it comes naturally to this type of woman. While they maintain healthy boundaries, if you need a shoulder to cry on or a listening ear they will be the first in line to give advice, help, and comfort.
  • They are mentally strong - Whether their life has been smooth sailing or they come from a traumatic past, these women have found a way to use their past experiences to make them stronger in the present. Instead of dwelling on the past, they live in the here and now while taking on challenges with ease.
  • Women embody self-confidence - When describing the strongest characteristics in women, the number one trait is bound to be confidence. There is nothing more appealing than a woman who knows that she is worthy of respect from the world around and doesn’t have an ego to go with it.
“A woman is like a tea bag – you never know how strong she is until she gets in hot water.”
-Eleonore Roosevelt

Happy Women’s Day!

TEAMS
Beginning June 1, Ausland Group will actively switch from Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams as a tool for collaboration between people and projects, conversations and content. Teams is an interactive workspace where you can chat, call, and collaborate instantly with people within the company and outside guests as well. It allows people to work towards a common goal and collaborate quickly and easily on a unified communication platform.
Some key features of Teams:
  • Activity tab: shows an ongoing list of activity related to projects and teams in which you are involved.
  • Chat tab: shows your conversations with individuals or groups and are persistent- meaning it’s an ongoing, searchable record of your entire conversation history.
  • Meetings tab: pulls any meetings previously scheduled in Outlook or Skype. You can also create a new meeting from within this tab. Meetings can be held straight from the Teams app so no additional screens are needed.
  • Files tab: you can see all documents shared within your teams or chats. Files are able to be viewed, edited, and saved within Teams or can be downloaded to the server and Cloud. Links to documents can also be sent to outside participating parties.
Tiffany will give a Teams tutorial May 16 at 10:30 a.m. for a Thursday Brain Break in GP and a Eugene presentation TBD. Mark your calendars!
SAFETY
FALLS FROM EQUIPMENT Falls are the most frequent cause of serious injuries to the operators, oilers and mechanics who run and maintain heavy construction equipment. As equipment continues to increase in size, injuries from falls are becoming more severe.
One cause of falls is just plain poor housekeeping. Oil, grease, mud, tools and parts are left on decks until somebody steps on or stumbles over the material and falls. In cold weather, frost, snow and ice are left undisturbed until the sun melts them or someone slips and falls.
Steps, ladders and grab bars come installed on most new equipment these days. They are intended for your safety and should be used both in getting on the machine and getting off. If these items are damaged or missing, report them and have them repaired. If you think a step or grab bar is needed on your machine where none has been provided, ask for one. It doesn't take that long to bend a strap or bar and weld it on. Maintain “3-point” contact such as two-feet/one hand or two-hand one foot.
Defective catwalks and handrails on shovels and cranes are another cause of falls. If your rig needs this kind of repair, have it taken care of now. Finally, many mechanics fall because they don't have a safe place to stand. You can do a better and faster job if you take time to get a stepladder or a platform to work from than if you spend half your time trying to balance on a narrow sloping part of the machine you are working on.
QUESTIONS FOR DISCUSSION:
  • Does any of the equipment on this job need repairs or additions to the ladders, steps or grab bars
  • How can we improve the housekeeping on the equipment we operate?
YAMMER
Yammer is an internal collaboration tool and social network Ausland Group uses to bring teams together. Its sole purpose is to help employees connect and communicate across our organization. You can think of it as an internal Facebook for business with your colleagues where updates are related to events, questions and problems colleagues are trying to solve.
Yammer is a place where we can showcase internal achievements with project photos, announcements or shout outs to our teammates for a job well done. With staff in distant areas, Yammer keeps our team connected and entertained with team photos (working, having fun, or both), gifs and jokes. Finally, for our marketing team, yammer is an instrumental tool to pull from for social media posts on Ausland’s public platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc..).
The Yammer app makes the program incredibly user friendly, allowing staff to post a photo or comment from their cell phone in a matter of seconds. Anyone can participate in Yammer, regardless if they have an Ausland email or not.
If you would like to join this fun Ausland perk, please reach out to Kara Bijesse at kbijesse@auslandgroup.com or 541-930-2636.
