Donor Spotlight - Rachel Baker
Rachel & her family
I was moved to make a start-up donation to help establish the American Musilm Fund because I share the founding values and vision of helping to heal our communities by working together to make a positive difference.
My maternal grandparents were Jewish and my paternal grandparents were Southern Baptist. My mixed family religious background taught me to appreciate shared values and humanity, even when they take different forms. As I grew older, my community has continued to expand. I lived in Spain, married a Polish immigrant and formed life-long friendships with my graduate school roommates from Bangladesh and India.
Over the past fifteen years, I have become inceasingly pained by the rise in suspician and fear of Islam in America. I hope that by joining the first Islamic community foundation, the American Muslim Fund, I can play a small part in creating a larger community in which our religions are a source of strength, not something that divides us.
I am also a donor to S.I.R.E.N., an organization based in San Jose, California that provides legal services and advocacy to support low-income immigrants and refugees.
Thank you for welcoming me to be part of the generous and caring community of donors to the American Muslim Fund.
