A collective voice is stronger than one.
Together, we want to showcase Muslim philanthropy and support nonprofits, by increasing sustainable good-will for the American Muslim Community.  We are the first Muslim community foundation in the United States. The American Muslim Fund (AMuslimFund) is a grassroots national community foundation (501c3 nonprofit) established in 2016 to streamline Muslim philanthropy by creating Donor Advised Funds (DAF’s), distributing grants, and building an endowment.

LaunchGood Update

Thank you to all our generous supporters for their contributions, helping spread the word and making our first Crowdfunding campaign a success, Alhamdulilah (Praise be to God)!

For those of you who supported our crowdfunding campaign in Ramadan, we wanted to let you know that our "swag" has been ordered. You should expect your reward by the end of October. Thank you again to all of our donors who made it possible. We exceeded our goal of and raised $64,000, here is the breakdown:

  • $23,000 zakat (which we will disburse to other organizations)
  • $18,000 for our endowment (which we will invest and continue fundraising for)
  • $23,000 for our operating budget (which we will use to purchase tools, hire part time staff, and continue fundraising for)

One of our co-founders, Muhi Khwaja, was recognized by his alma mater, the University of Michigan for his Distinction in Development. Having started his career through U of M's Development-Summer Internship Program in 2009, upon graduating, he joined the Institute for Social Policy & Understanding. After completing his Master's degree in Public Administration and Nonprofit Management, he was hired by Ta'leef Collective in 2013 and currently works for the American Red Cross as a Senior Philanthropy Officer. He actively participates with the Association of Fundraising Professionals, speaking on best practices, diversity in development, and Islam & Philanthropy. Join us in congratulating Muhi!

Community Foundation Highlights

Of the 15 families we worked with to setup Donor Advised Funds, 3 supported the Islamic Scholarship Fund. ISF envisions a society where religion, culture, and race are not barriers to equality. Their mission is to increase American Muslim representation in media and politics in order to improve public opinion and policy. ISF provides scholarships to students working with the Muslim community and pursuing a bachelor's or graduate degree in certain fields. Find out more about ISF online.

Donor Spotlight - Hashem Family

Basil, Ghina, Kenaan, & Yezen
Our family has lived in the San Francisco Bay Area for the past 15 years. We recently established our Donor Advised Fund with American Muslim Fund because we wanted to simplify giving, consolidate reporting and increase the value of our gifts (thru tax-preferred deferred distribution).

As both our families hail from Syria, we have been deeply affected by the country's crisis and worldwide refugee situation. One of our favorite charities is the Karam Foundation ( which is doing very uplifting and noble work to better the condition of Syrian refugees around the world. One of our favorite quotes that captures our approach to charity work and giving are Ali bin Abi Talib's famous words:

"Do for this life as if you live forever, do for the afterlife as if you die tomorrow."

Godwilling, we strive and give with this intention and hope that American Muslim Fund continues to flourish to become an enduring endowment for the long-term.
