THE MOVEMENT MONTHLY

May 2022

Hello, Movement family and friends.

We are now in May! Can you believe that?

This school year has flown by so quickly, and I am incredibly grateful for what God has done in the lives of students and families this year. Last week I was sitting back and watching our students and leaders worship together. I looked at the space we have been given and created, and I saw students leading other students. I saw students leading lights, sound, and tech upstairs. I left being so grateful to God for what he has done and is doing here! We are not perfect, and we never arrive. But, we have a very strong ministry going on here in this season!

As we end our school year, I want to give glory to God first. He has been faithful. Through 2 years of Covid and so forth, he has carried this ministry forward. I also want to thank our youth coaches. An amazing team has been built, and I am so grateful for how they plug in here. They do a wonderful job investing in the lives of students here with intentionality. I also need to thank Ashleigh Sewell. I hired her this past September, and she has been such a blessing to do ministry with. It's an honor to lead them here at Blackhawk, and together, we make a top-notch team.

There are always things that I can do better as a leader, and there are some new goals that I have for our student ministry here. We will get there, and I know that the future is incredibly bright for us here at Blackhawk.

Thanks for your continued support of The Movement!

Do you prefer sweet or salty snacks?
Both. But by far, a good chocolate chip cookie with pecans.

If you were planning a vacation in the United States, would you want to drive or fly to your destination?
Drive.

What is one Bible verse that has had a significant impact on your life? If you can, share a brief story about why.
I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.  Galatians 2:20

This is my life verse. The truth that reminds me that faith is Christ‘s gift to me. And whenever life in this body makes little or no sense, I trust in the person and character of God, my Savior.

My other life verse is Habakkuk 3:17. Though the fig tree does not bud and there are no grapes on the vines, though the olive crop fails and the fields produce no food, though there are no sheep in the pen and no cattle in the stalls, YET I will rejoice in the Lord, I will be joyful in God my Savior. [Emphasis mine]

This is the verse that God gave me when we received Jim’s diagnosis five years ago. It is a lesson of faith… to trust in God’s unfailing love and faithfulness regardless of life’s circumstances; to rejoice in the Lord even in the midst of life’s most difficult challenges. Like David, to sing praises in the midst of troubles.

If you could go back and tell your high school self one thing, what would it be?
Know God’s Word… the whole truth. And, that He has a plan for me that is greater than the confines of the people and places of my high school.

Fly

What is one Bible verse that has had a significant impact on your life? If you can, share a brief story about why.
Romans 8:28 has allowed me to rest in God's plans. He is working out ALL things for my good and his glory. When he does not answer my prayers (big or small) the way I think they should go, I have learned to rest in the knowledge that God loves me and I can trust Him. I have learned to rest in him more and have less anxiety over the way things work out.

If you could go back and tell your high school self one thing, what would it be?
Run decisions through God's filter. Pray about it!

Do you prefer sweet or salty snacks?
I am definitely more of a sweets gal. My weakness is candy - Sour Patch Kids, gummy bears, gummy worms, and peach rings are just a few of my favorites!

If you were planning a vacation in the United States, would you want to drive or fly to your destination?
I tend to get a little car sick, so flying is more my jam. I also get really bored on long drives, but I can get to my destination much quicker when I fly!

What is one Bible verse that has had a significant impact on your life? If you can, share a brief story about why.
Matthew 5:16 has been my “life verse” since I was a kid. It says, “In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.” This verse constantly reminds me that all that I get to do is only because of Him. My prayer each day is to honor and glorify Him in everything I do - pointing people to Him and not myself. God has opened so many doors for me and given me incredible opportunities to share the talents and gifts He has blessed me with. When I stand before Him someday, I hope that I can look back and see that I used all of those opportunities to serve Him and point others to Him. It is a daily reminder that I am made to build His Kingdom and not my own.

If you could go back and tell your high school self one thing, what would it be?
Spend time soaking up everything you can right now. Don’t get so focused on what is happening next that you miss out on all that God is doing in & through you right now!

Movement Moments:
(April 2022)
How is April already over?! After Spring Break, we picked up our weekly gatherings again in the North Chapel. We had 3 incredible weeks together full of fun and good conversations.

April 11th was our final night of Q&A! We had so many students submit great questions, so we couldn't stop after just 3 weeks. This last week started with both guys and girls together while our panel of Youth Coaches answered a few tough questions asked by students. We then broke up into two groups to discuss topics like dating, singleness, friendships, navigating change, learning how to live in the present, and any additional questions that students brought up. Along with Pastor Weaz and Ashleigh, our Youth Coaches led these discussions sharing truth from God's Word, personal experience, and life advice. They did such an excellent job pointing students to the Truth and giving them solid advice to consider.

For our final two weeks of April, Pastor Weaz and Ashleigh taught John 11:1-44, where Jesus brought Lazarus back to life! Pastor Weaz started this series by teaching on how hard it can be to wait on God. Jesus didn't arrive in Bethany (the city where Lazarus died) until 4 days after he had passed! Lazarus' sisters, Mary and Martha, had trouble understanding why it took Him so long to get there. Pastor Weaz talked about how frustrating it can feel when you are left in a time of waiting. It often feels very discouraging and lonely. But, we have the promise that He still has a plan. And thankfully, the story doesn't end there!

Ashleigh followed up with part 2 of this series: new life. From John 11:17-44, we can be reminded of 7 things that Jesus did for Mary, Martha, and Lazarus, that He also does for us today:
1. It is never too late for Him to work (v.22)
2. He can do far more than what we can imagine (v.23-26)
3. We do not have to have it all figured out to believe in Who He is (v.26-27)
4. Jesus calls us to come to Him with our pain (v.28-31)
5. Jesus is deeply moved by our pain (v.32-37)
6. Jesus isn't afraid of what we try to hide behind our closed doors (v.38-39)
7. Jesus can bring new life into what seems dead (v.40-44)

We also had a handful of students serve at the Blackhawk Ministries "GLOW" Easter event for our community. We are so proud of all of those who jumped into this opportunity to BE LIGHT to the hundreds of people who came to the event. Check out the pictures below to see some of them in action!

We are heading into our FINAL MONTH of regular Wednesday nights before we kick off the summer. We hope you/your student will join us for the last 4 weeks of the school year!! We have some pretty exciting things happening, and we would love to have you a part of it!

If you haven't plugged in yet, this is your invitation! Now is your time. YOU matter, and we would love the chance to get to know you and connect with you!
