Never underestimate the power of Joy!

As I write this, it is very white and grey outside (a rather monochromatic scheme), so I am sending you lots of colour and pattern, hoping it will bring you joy and inspiration!

Even though I am working from a tiny room under the eaves in our house, it has not stifled my creativity! January saw the completion of a very special commission of a family cottage. Many of you saw the process throughout last year on your visits to my studio or on social media. Here is the finished piece!

Just for fun: can you find the hummingbirds, the blue jays, the turtle, a cactus, a skunk and a woodpecker?

For the past year I have been on a quest to simplify my life.  For example: reducing decision making by having a reduced wardrobe of only things I love, having a list of favourite dinner options to make shopping and cooking easier (I would much rather be in my studio than the kitchen :)). A big part of this process is of course organizing and simplifying your home. As those of you who have been to my house know, I am not a minimalist!! All my beautiful little art pieces and collections have so much meaning to me, which is why I have had so much trouble with this concept as most aficionados of simplicity value minimalism. Until now! I have come across a wonderful book called ‘Joyful, the surprising power of ordinary things to create extraordinary happiness ‘ by Ingrid Fetell Lee. It turns out, those colourful, happy collections are really important, because : THEY BRING ME JOY! And what would life be without joy?
De-cluttering and organizing your home is definitely a good idea, not to become a minimalist but because your special treasures will become the focal point of your room and the extra time you gain by not searching for things or making endless decisions, will give you extra time to spend creating... and that brings joy!
For a week in February, my husband and I were fortunate to be traveling to San Francisco and down the coast to Santa Cruz and Carmel-by-the-Sea. Besides loving the green vegetation and flowers, we enjoyed the Victorian architecture on harrowing steep streets, the forests of giant redwood trees, the stark coastal landscapes and the many mosaics, which crossed our paths. With a warmer climate, colourful outdoor mosaics brighten everyone’s path in California! On the left is the 163 step stairway located in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Heights neighbourhood created by artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher in a community effort. Just magnificent!

Mark your calendars!

This will be our 3rd annual outdoor art show right here on our property! Come wander through the whimsical spring garden scattered with artists' tents, sharing their talents. Visual treats this year include live edge cutting boards and benches, quilts and abstract painting, plasticine art, pottery yarn bowls, whimsical illustrations, purses made from recycled sweaters, encaustic sunflower paintings, handmade soap, stained glass art, jewellery, vintage furniture and of course my newest mosaics. As you rest amongst the trees, sipping a coffee and nibbling a gorgeous cheesecake in a jar, you can ponder, which of the locally hand made treasures you would like to bring home!
Bill Fawcett’s gorgeous stained glass.
Kate Morris's acrylic painting based on her quilt designs.
Nancy Gagne’s lovely scented handmade soap.
Sweet Couture Cakes will return with her delicious treats!
So go out on these cold and grey winter days and find yourself something that brings you joy! Paint your walls a vibrant red, upholster a footstool in pink polka dots or just put out a bowl of striped candy…..
Choose Joy!
