NEWS FROM THE MMC - SEPTEMBER 2019

THE MINNESOTA MUSIC COALITION PRESENTS CARAVAN DU NORD:
A SHOWCASE OF MINNESOTA MUSIC

The Minnesota Music Coalition (MMC) is thrilled to announce the lineup for the 9th annual Caravan du Nord, a traveling showcase of Minnesota music focused around bringing music communities together and bridging the gap between music scenes across the state of Minnesota. Sponsored by The Current and grant funded by The Minnesota State Arts Board, this statewide tour was brought to life by Minnesota voters with support from the legislative appropriation of the arts and cultural heritage fund.

The 2019 Caravan du Nord showcase features over a dozen bands and solo artists in venues across Greater Minnesota. The shows are open to all ages and are preceded by workshops, and networking events for musicians. This year’s Caravan du Nord program features headliner Reina del Cid along with some of Minnesota’s top emerging acts: The OK Factor, The Morning Kings, Whalen and the Willows, Irie Minds, and more.

The 2019 Caravan du Nord showcase visits six Greater Minnesota communities--Austin, Faribault, Detroit Lakes, Red Wing, Moorhead, and Mankato, bringing each respective music scene together for an educational, collaborative, and entertaining day of events. In addition to the three-act performance at each stop, attendees will have the opportunity to participate in workshops and networking events led by featured MMC artists, DJs, and music industry professionals.

CARAVAN INFORMATION
ELLEN STANLEY STEPPING DOWN AS MMC’S EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

With bittersweet feelings, the Minnesota Music Coalition is announcing the resignation of its Executive Director, Ellen Stanley. Ellen was the first Executive Director of the Minnesota Music Coalition (MMC). In her six year tenure as Executive Director, Ellen grew the MMC from a fledgling Board-managed arts organization into a statewide service organization comprised of over 300 members, operating six major programs, including the Caravan du Nord, a statewide tour by Minnesota musicians throughout Greater Minnesota, the Minnesota Music Summit, a 3-day festival (a mini-SXSW for Minnesota musicians), and a musician mentoring program. Ellen’s infectious enthusiasm for the MMC’s mission, for the arts in general, and for her job, and her ability to raise the public profile of the organization with limited resources was truly impressive.

While MMC conducts a thorough search for its new Executive Director, MMC’s staff will continue to operate all MMC programs without interruption. The Board hopes to have a new Executive Director in place by January 1, 2020, and news about the search process will be coming soon. For questions about this development, please contact Beth Burns, Board Secretary (burnsbeth28@gmail.com) (651) 288-0411.

In the meantime, questions about MMC programming can be directed to the
following staff:

• Caravan du Nord and Membership – Stephanie Hansen (stephanie@mnmusiccoalition.org)
• Booking and publicity – David Ostrom (david@mnmusiccoalition.org)
• Mentoring – Symone Wilson (mentoring@mnmusiccoalition.org)

WHAT A SUMMER!

This summer, the MMC teamed up with the St. Paul Downtown Alliance and Block by Block to bring music and culture to the streets of St. Paul. The result of these partnerships was a summer long busking series featuring MMC member performers 4 days a week throughout our Capital city. We wanted to give a huge thanks to all the MMC performers that participated in this busking series, and an additional thanks to the St. Paul Downtown Alliance and Block by Block for making this all possible, and helping us support the local community.
