Greetings Ward 8,

It is that time of year where we determine how effective District agencies are performing through performance oversight hearings. The performance oversight hearings communicate the agency focus, what is essential, and align processes and people with strategic objectives while monitoring progress in executing the strategy.

Performance oversight provides guidelines on how to grow and develop equitably. I will continue to address the needs of the underserved communities by upholding standards that support all residents of the District. There is still more work to do.

Our actions today will prepare us for the upcoming budget season. If we are not organized, we will be reacting rather than leading. As we continue to make strides towards improving these agencies, I am listening to these recommendations from residents and advocating for you. I am proud to serve as the Councilmember for Ward 8 to ensure that we make things happen.

Trayon White, Sr.
Councilmember, Ward 8

D.C. Councilmember works to save alternative school slated for closing

A D.C. Councilmember wants to keep Washington Metropolitan Opportunity Academy open another year, even as top school officials prepare for its closure.

Last week, D.C. Public Schools Chancellor Lewis D. Ferebee announced he would close the alternative middle and high school at the end of this academic year amid declining enrollment and poor academic outcomes. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D) signed off on the decision.

Councilmembers Brianne K. Nadeau (D-Ward 1) and Trayon White Sr. (D-Ward 8) have said they oppose closing the school. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) said in a statement he does not believe it’s “a good idea to overrule the Chancellor in this case.” Most council members have not indicated how they would vote.
