The Tarot is a pack of 78 cards divided in that became very popular and, 22 'Major Arcana' and 56 'Minor Arcana' organized in 4 suits of 14 cards each. The Tarot appeared in several parts of Europe in the 14th century. It was popularly used as a card game, which is still played today. There were several designs and from the late 18th century some packs began to be used for divination. But besides these exoteric uses, there has been some thinkers for whom the Tarot meant much more. Some versions have been considered as a symbolic text-book of Ageless Wisdom summarizing in its images and its attributions the ageless secrets of alchemy, astrology, magic and Kabbalah. Its influence on the minds of some enlightened writers can be traced since the revival of occult studies that began in 1854 with the publication of 'Dogma and Ritual of Transcendental Magic' by the great 19th-century occultist Eliphas Levi, the first in a series of publications in which Levi mentions the Tarot as his most important source of information and inspiration. He writes:

'As an erudite Kabalistic book, all combinations of which reveal the harmonies preexisting between signs, letters and numbers, the practical value of Tarot is truly and above all marvellous. A prisoner devoid of books had he only a Tarot of which he knew how to make use, could in a few years acquire a universal science, and converse with an unequalled doctrine and inexhaustible eloquence'

In his books, Levi published a correspondence of the Tarot cards with the Kabbalistic 32 paths of Wisdom that puts in evidence the esoteric construction of the Tarot. In this way, the Tarot becomes a tool for the expansion of consciousness. For the one who discovers its occult uses, the Tarot becomes an indispensable instrument in the search for higher Wisdom.

In this lecture, we will explore the symbolism of the Tarot, how it is constructed based on the Kabbalistic Sepher Yetzirah - the Book of Formation. How it is designed to work following natural laws of consciousness, and how it can be used to support the practical search for the attainment of higher consciousness.

About it, Helena P. Blavatsky writes:

“As for it being understood or utilized, the many fortune-tellers in Paris, who make a professional living by it, are sad specimens of failures of attempts at reading, let alone correctly interpreting the symbolism of the Tarot without a preliminary philosophical study of the Science.”

Orlando is the son of a wise woman of the Conchero magical tradition in Mexico, He started his spiritual journey at a very early age, participating in festivals and open-air rituals very often performed at the top of forgotten pyramids, set in the volcanic landscape of his native land. Some years later, while reading pure mathematics, Orlando discovered his true spiritual love: the Western Esoteric Tradition. The charms of Rosicrucianism, Alchemy, and Theosophy proved to be an irresistible attraction and since then Orlando has been studying and participating in the practical work of several esoteric fraternities. In particular, he has been a member of the Theosophical Society in England for several years, where he has been invited to give lectures to his fellow Theosophists on several occasions. Orlando likes to emphasise that he has approached the esoteric not only from the practical side but he also has a keen interest in the philosophical and the scholarly aspects of the esoteric. Orlando completed an MA in Western Esotericism at the University of Exeter writing a memoire on “Music and Esotericism in the Twentieth Century.” Having obtained a PhD in Mathematical Physics from the Unversity of Paris followed by a series of postgraduate research work in King’s College of London and being trained as a scientist Orlando is also very interested in the relationship between science and the esoteric, and has written a PhD dissertation “Esoteric Quantization: The Influence of the Esoteric Imagination in the Interpretation of Quantum Mechanics”. Orlando also likes to point out that his spiritual journey is not limited to the Western tradition as he has been engaged with the practical side of Kashmir Shaivism, and he is pursuing a serious programme of Yoga in Shrinagar, Rishikesh, and Varanasi.
