For immediate release – Houston’s ROCO (River Oaks Chamber Orchestra) will release their debut album, Visions Take Flight, with innova Recordings on November 16, 2018. Conducted by Mei-Ann Chen and produced by GRAMMY®-winning producer Blanton Alspaugh, the album features six works collectively chosen by ROCO’s musicians from the ensemble’s long list of commissions spanning their 14-year existence.
Visions Take Flight includes Karim Al-Zand’s haunting Visions from Another World (2008), Reena Esmail’s pulsing, unpredictable Teen Murti (2013), Derek Bermel’s tender, 2015 commission Murmurations, Anthony DiLorenzo’s whimsical Jabberwocky (2014), and Marcus Maroney’s Bartók-inspired Concerto for Chamber Orchestra (2016).
The sixth and final work featured in the collection, Anthem of Hope: Houston Strong by Anthony DiLorenzo, was commissioned in 2017 in honor of Houston’s resolve following the destruction of Hurricane Harvey. Composed in a week’s time and shared in various arrangements with other arts organizations throughout Houston, the work embodies the strength and resilience of ROCO’s home community. In an interview with Houston Public Media before the work’s premiere, Alecia Lawyer, Founder, Artistic Director, and Principal Oboe for the ensemble said, “The idea is to create a thread of music tying us all together, illustrating the unity Houston has displayed in the past few weeks.” After experiencing major recording delays during this disaster, ROCO chose to complete their debut album with DiLorenzo’s powerful fanfare.
