I hope you are well.
I’ve been meaning to pop in here but life took a detour and here we are in mid-November.
I come to you today holding an arm full of gratitude because I’m grateful for the life I have right now. Not yesterday or the one planned for a future date. No, the life I’m living right here and right now.
This week has been testing. My first physio appointment ended up with me being red flagged to A&E. And from there taken by ambulance to our central hospital to undergo a spinal operation.
I had a bulging disc in my lower spine pressing on my nerves which was rendering my right leg useless more or less. A numbness was entering my nether regions and an operation was called for and fast, before I lost control of my bladder and bowels.
Writing this now, the seriousness of the situation is only just coming home. Things were happening all so fast that there really wasn’t the time and space to reflect on it all while in the thick of it.
It is only now, home and recovering that I can make some kind of sense of it. And gratitude is the overriding feeling.
I share my story because I’m in a position to be able to share my story. I advocated for myself and got a niggling pain sorted out. Okay it got to the point of really bothering me first and having to take pain killers but I knew there was something wrong with my body and didn’t stop until I got answers and got it sorted out.
The first urgent care nurse I saw told me it was nothing but muscle inflammation. Yes I know I’m inflamed but that is a symptom of an under lining cause, I said. I was released with a booklet on how to do knee exercises.
I’m not bitter or even gonna think that maybe she didn’t listen to me because I was a black woman, I’m just glad I didn’t give up on me.
And as I recover slowly, I continue to not give upon me. What is keeping me sane and in a joyful state, and that is how I describe how I’m living now in this present moment; a joyful state while experiencing lower back pain, is all because of my creativity.
You can see what I’ve been up to by following the links below. I know links can be annoying but it’s the only way right now I can fit in all the things that’s been happening.
I’ve been profiled on The Phoenix Soul’s artists’ profile. It’s awesome seeing and witnessing some of the wisdom I have accumulated in the last 4 or 5 years that I share in this feature. It’s only when you see it removed from yourself can you take on board the lessons learned and shared.
I’ve been updating the blog space with some cool posts on my create endeavours.
1. Sharing my new visual journaling portfolio
2. Sharing a poem called Listen which was published at Nine Muses Poetry.
3. Contemplating exploring The Healing Properties of the Seas project which involves 10 second videos of the sea.
4. Experimenting with handmade books.
5. Feeding my soul with all things creative in my everyday life.
6. Sharing a flip-thru of my current journal on YouTube ( a first).
Take your time exploring these links. And as always you’re welcome to hit reply and leave a comment or question or just say hi.
Hopefully, it won’t be as long the next time I pop into your inbox but who knows what’s around the corner, that’s another reason why I’m grateful for my now.
