It has been a busy summer of legislative work, campaign activities, and personal travel. These have been great opportunities to learn what other states are doing, best practices, and meet legislators from other states.
This photo was taken at the Shedd Aquarium on Lake Michigan where Debbie and I were able to attend the Midwest CSG conference (Council of State Governments) July 20-24. It was a great conference with many opportunities to network with many other state legislators in the upper Midwest. We had a great time.
On June 7th, at the KAFP (KS Academy of Family Physicians) Annual meeting/banquet in Wichita—my whole family was able to be in attendance for my award as the Kansas Family Physician of the Year. I was very humbled to receive this nomination and selection. Thanks KAFP for your recognition and support.

On June 20th I gave a legislative “wrap-up” on the 2019 session to my Atchison Rotary Club. Everyone was very happy that our last school funding bill to address K-12 public education funding plus inflation through 2023 passed and has been ruled Constitutional by the Kansas Supreme Court—the first time in 9 years! This was a major goal of mine when I got elected in 2016. Now we must stay on the established schedule of funding going forward.
This is a photo from the Atchison County Fair parade in Effingham on August 9th. We’re so happy that our daughter Lindsay and Dave have relocated back to Atchison for new jobs at Benedictine (Lindsay) and Univ of St Mary’s (Dave). It’s great to have family help with campaign duties. Gideon Vance is being held by Lindsay and Julian Vance is holding up the sign.
On June 10th USD 409 School Board held its last meeting with Superintendent Dr Susan Meyers (seated center) who has been our greatest champion of Atchison Schools for 12 years. She has been an outstanding Superintendent and led us through good times and bad. Best of luck to Susan in retirement!
It is an honor and a pleasure representing you at the Capitol. Please feel free to share my legislative newsletter with your friends and family and do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or comments.
