BELCONNEN MAGPIES 21.18.144 def GUNGAHLIN JETS 6.8.44

It was a unique experience for the playing group, travelling into a match following a win. Something they have not experienced for a couple of years. Unfortunately, the result was a poor one. In the end, we were beaten convincingly by arguably the best team in the competition.

From a Jets perspective, the match ebbed and flowed. The start and end were poor, and the middle two quarters were good. The first quarter saw the Belconnen Magpies dominate play bringing a level of intensity that jumped the Jets. Something we will need to focus on moving forward. The Magpies moved the footy very quickly kicking eight goals to the Jets two.

The following two quarters were a different story, for the first time this year the Jets played proper Div 1 football and competed well against the Magpies. We won the hit-outs and clearances and moved the football well. By the middle of the third quarter, we had two gettable opportunities to put the Jets within 25 points of the Magpies. This, unfortunately, was a missed opportunity and two points were kicked.

The last quarter saw a disappointing blowout, seeing the magpies pile on 42 points in the last 19 minutes against a deflated Jets. There are lots to learn from this game and the playing group is looking forward to the challenge of playing the Magpies again later in the year.

Special mentions to Nathan Oakes and Matthew Verdanega who worked tirelessly in the midfield, and Brendan Corbett who took plenty or marks in the back line.

Also, congratulations to the three debutants for the day Nathan Oakes, Ash Brown, Sam Tonkes.

Next week we return to our home ground to take on the Eastlake Demons. The boys are ready to take their learnings from this match against a young Eastlake team.

BELCONNEN MAGPIES 11.6.72 def GUNGAHLIN JETS 5.1.31

Another beautiful sunny day to start round 2 of the season. All matches being played away against Belconnen.

Being the semi final rematch from last year in which the Jets were victorious, it was know that it was going to be a hard fought and revengeful game.

The first quarter started well, being able to go goal for goal with Belconnen and held our structures well. A few quick goals to Belconnen left us at the break 2 goals down but still very much in the contest.

During second and third quarter, the Jets tying hard to work on getting their hands on the ball in dispute and playing positive but defensive footy. Belconnen somewhat being overly aggressive but playing a very attacking style of football, the Jets never gave up and managed to covert a few more goals.

With a few battered and bruised players and the interchange working overtime to coordinate sore bodies, the siren went with the Jets taking their first loss of the season.

The girls can hold their heads high, as they were tested physically on the ground the emotion of the game was high. To hold their structures and disciple through until the final siren is a credit to their culture. We play for each other and have each other’s back no matter what. No Jet flies alone.

Round 3 we are back at GEO for Pink Footy Day! A day which is all about celebrating Women in sport and fighting it out for the inaugural Pink Trophy!

Go Jets!

BELCONNEN MAGPIES 21.13.129 def GUNGAHLIN JETS 0.2.2

Round 2 presented a big challenge for the Div 2 men, up against a strong Belconnen outfit who were coming off a big win against last years undefeated premiers Ainslie. While it was a daunting task, the boys embraced the challenge and showed no fear in taking on the competition’s heavyweights.

We welcomed a couple of first gamers in Tim Hourigan and Rhys Ferguson, Wasim Nasser accepted an invitation to have a run, and Eric Parkin played his first official game as a Jet after transferring from Woden. With Kris Archibald out (Doctors orders!) meant we needed a new Vice Captain for the day. I was very proud to announce Travis Scholfield as our Vice Captain in Arch’s absence.

We started a little slowly in the first term, with Belconnen hitting the scoreboard with 3 very quick goals. This seemed to wake the boys up and a very tight tussle ensued for the remainder of the quarter. Our pressure on the ball carrier and tenacious tackling were two definite highlights of a good quarter. Peter Lake down back was absolutely huge for the Jets, with countless intercept marks highlighting his ability to read the play so well.

We highlighted a few areas to focus on at quarter time, specifically to maintain our good pressure and to use the ball well and hit our targets. For the most part we did this really well, however a few late goals allowed Belconnen to shoot out to a big lead.

Our half time message was a positive one, we just needed to compete for longer and to be disciplined enough that when the ball went into our attacking 50, to not have players sucked in and cramp space for our forwards. A big job was given to first gamer Tim Hourigan – to go to Belconnen’s most lethal forward and do a job – and do a job he did, spoiling everything that came his way. For a first gamer to take on and beat a very experienced player was something for Tim to be incredibly proud of.

Our second half was pretty good – we moved the ball well, with a little bit more composure in the backline by going back to what we have been practising at training – using our pocket kick to great effect and maintaining possession for longer. While Belconnen were able to score goals at the end of both the third and fourth quarter, the scoreboard didn’t really reflect how competitive the Jets were. I was very proud of the commitment all the boys gave to the jersey as we continue building a strong competitive squad, while earning respect from the rest of the competition.

BELCONNEN MAGPIES 6.8.44 def by GUNGALIN JETS 6.10.46

Congratulations to the Jets Rising Stars for a gutsy win over the Magpies by 2 points. We didn't get off to a great start, but were always in the hunt and with determination and discipline the Jets got over the magpies to take the win.

The coaching staff were proud of the boys for the way they responded after been told to switch on and start playing football.

From there the Jets took it upon themselves to rise to the challenge as a group to come from behind against a strong classy outfit.

Frase and Loobs praised the backline for their defensive pressure early in the match which allowed the Jets to stay in touch on the score board .

Coaching staff were very pleased with all players, with everyone playing there role and stepping up to contribute to the victory

The boys look to continue their momentum against Eastlake at GEO this Saturday, 5th May, which again is set up to be another tough close game.

Thanks again to all our supporters who turned up and cheered the boys on.
