We are calling on our elected leaders to immediately extend California's eviction moratorium. Countless families across the state are at risk of being forced from their homes and accumulating more unresolved debt. Without meaningful action from our state legislature, the racial wealth divide will accelerate, public health will suffer, and the economic costs to our families and communities will increase.
Extending eviction protections will give state and local governments the much-needed time to successfully roll out and complete the rental assistance program, which will protect both renters and landlords from further impacts of the crises we are facing. As a local example, in the city of San Mateo alone, $7.16 million has been request in rental assistance applications, but as of August 26, only $2.05 million has been paid out to renters and landlords in need.
