Target Goal: $3,883 to Prevent His Eviction

As Faith in Action Bay Area, we’ve been working diligently to ensure protections are in place to keep our community members safe at home during an unprecedented pandemic. As the federal eviction moratorium comes to an end, we are beginning to see that the current laws have failed to protect many in our community. There is much work we must continue to do.

Marcelo Moraes is a Faith in Action Bay Area leader who is facing eviction on August 1. In the month prior to the pandemic, Marcelo had serious health issues and accrued $3,883 in rent debt. Westlake Village Apartments initiated the eviction process to kick him out, but when the pandemic began, Marcelo was able to shelter in place in his apartment because of the federal (CDC) eviction moratorium.

Due to the economic closures during the pandemic, Marcelo was unable to find stable employment. Now, Marcelo has found a job and his application for the state rent relief has been approved. Westlake will receive a $40,000+ check from the government for Marcelo’s rent. Despite this, Westlake is still refusing to drop his eviction case over the $3,883 from before the pandemic.

As Marcelo’s debt is from the month prior to the pandemic, he is not currently protected by the state eviction moratorium. He is initiating this fundraiser for the community to support him, as covering the $3,883 will allow him to be fully protected by the state law and resolve his eviction case. If unresolved, the sheriffs will come to his house to evict him as soon as August 1--an incredibly traumatic experience that we can collectively prevent.

Join us in supporting Marcelo by donating to his fundraiser and reading his full story on his GoFundMe.

Marcelo’s case is only the first in a line of coming evictions as eviction moratorium protections at different levels come to an end. As a community we must continue to make sure that no one is left without a home.
