The Gift of Being in Charge

When I agree to coach my children's sports teams, organize a fundraising event, teach a fitness class, or sit on the Board of Directors for community organizations, I'm giving others the gift of not having to be in charge.

We all like to be able to just show up to an event and enjoy ourselves. And each of us has responsibilities that prevent us from being in charge of many things. So when it's possible to be the one in charge, I try to take on the responsibility. And it's rewarding to be able to give the members of my community the gift of not being in charge.

As the gift-giver, I try to remind myself of the gift-giving during those crazy moments where everything seems to be happening at once. As the gift-receiver, when I feel the urge to question how things are being done, I try to remind myself how grateful I am not to be in charge.

Let's remember today to be grateful for the gifts of being in charge and not being in charge.

Make it a great day!
