Platonism and Aristotelianism in the History of Philosophy

FINO Graduate Conference in the History of Philosophy
Pavia (IT), 16-17 Sept. 2019

The History of Philosophy Curriculum of the North-Western Italian Philosophy Consortium (FINO), together with Collegio Giasone del Maino di Pavia, is pleased to announce the 4th edition of the International Graduate Conference in the History of Philosophy, entitled Platonism and Aristotelianism in the History of Philosophy, Pavia, Collegio Giasone del Maino, Sept. 16-17, 2019.

The organizers welcome presentations on the developments of both Platonism and Aristotelianism throughout the later Greek, Arabic, Latin, early and late modern traditions, up to and including twentieth-century philosophy. Presentations will discuss salient issues in the transmission of, elaboration upon, and innovation within the philosophies of Plato and Aristotle along the different trajectories of their philosophical afterlives; they will *not* address either Plato or Aristotle as philosophers in their own terms.

Invited speakers include Guido Giglioni (Urbino), Sarah Hutton (York) and Pauliina Remes (Uppsala).

Submissions are encouraged from both MA and Ph.D. students, as well as early career scholars with a Ph.D. earned no earlier than 2017. Presentations may be delivered in either English or French. Time allowance is 30 minutes for presentations, followed by 20 minutes for discussion. Successful applicants will be notified by July 31, 2019. Participants will be hosted in Collegio Giasone del Maino, Pavia, and they may wish to inquire about funding for travel costs from their home institutions as no reimbursement is available. No registrations fees apply.

Please submit your application to Paola Rumore by July 15, 2019 at paola.rumore@unito.it as .doc(x), .rtf, or .pdf. enclosing the following: (i) a cover letter stating the applicant’s name, institutional affiliation, contact information, and title of the proposed paper; (ii) an abstract of 250 words in either English or French carrying the title of the paper and, for the purpose of blind review, no information identifying the author or his/her affiliation. Submissions that are not prepared for blind review will not be considered.

Petrus Hispanus on cognitio and experientia: Theories and Practices in Context

Max Planck Institute for the History of Science (MPIWG)
Berlin, 19th-20th September 2019

Call for papers open until 10th July for a short number of places.
Please email your proposal (name, institution, title, 300 words abstract maximum)
to gfm@letras.up.pt.

The works attributed to Petrus Hispanus (13th Century) cover several domains of the Aristotelian philosophical and the Galenic-Avicennian medical corpora, including logic, psychology, zoology, prescription books, medical commentaries, alchemy, and mysticism, but also ranging to sermons and papal bulls. Despite these connections and the understanding we have acquired of them over the past four decades of research, these domains were never studied under a global perspective of theories and practices in context. The colloquium intends to fill this lacuna and carry out a survey of the complex corpus from the viewpoint of cognitio and experientia. This viewpoint is a central theoretical theme in the epistemological and psychological works, but connected to a much wider range of problems and practices in several other fields, such as mysticism, alchemy, medicine, and sermons.
All presentations to be delivered are intended to explore cognitio and experientia in these different disciplinary domains in order to gain a deeper and precise understanding of the diverse and complex theories and practices related to them. Since little is known to this date about these interrelations, perspectives and approaches in philosophy, philology and history will be combined.
This interdisciplinary approach is intended to place Petrus Hispanus in his contexts of sources and influences and debates with contemporary mid-13th century authors. By this reason, comparative approaches are welcomed too.
