The Field of Drug Discovery is Rapidly Changing, and the UA College of Pharmacy is Rising to the Occasion

When it comes to pursuing drug discovery at the University of Arizona, “Everything is finally aligned,” says Rick G. Schnellmann, Dean of the College of Pharmacy. John Musil ’94 recently made a gift to create the Musil Family Endowed Chair in Drug Discovery. The family’s generosity builds on significant momentum the college began with the help of its supporters and collaborators, including the expansion of the Skaggs Pharmaceutical Sciences Center and the establishment of the Arizona Center for Drug Discovery.

Study Reviews Risk of Hospitalizations and Mortality by Alzheimer's Disease Medications

College of Pharmacy and HOPE Center investigator, Sandipan Bhattacharjee, MS, PhD, published a new study in Alzheimer's & Dementia: Translational Research & Clinical Interventions (TRCI). The study, titled Alzheimer's disease medication and risk of all-cause mortality and all-cause hospitalization: A retrospective cohort study, used real-world evidence to review how the risk of hospitalization and mortality differed by Alzheimer disease (AD) medication in real-world settings. 

Key findings included:

  • Type of Alzheimer's disease medication initiation had overall all-cause mortality differences
  • Donepezil initiation had survival benefit compared with other Alzheimer's disease medications
  • Hospitalization risk differed by type of Alzheimer's disease medication initiation in intention-to-treat analysis

Pharmacists of the Future

Since 1997, the College of Pharmacy has hosted PharmCamp, a program that exposes students to science and careers in health care. Full of hands-on learning opportunities, PharmCamp is held in different locations across Arizona for middle-school-aged students: Tucson, Phoenix, Sierra Vista, Casa Grande, Nogales and Yuma.

PharmD Student Participates in Mayo Clinic Summer Pharmacy Internship

Aeryana Beaudrie-Nunn, PharmD Class of 2021, spent 10 weeks as an inpatient pharmacy intern at the Mayo Clinic Hospital - Saint Marys Campus Emergency Department. She credits the program for giving her high-quality clinical experiences to help learn, observe and understand the meaning of being a well-rounded, fully competent pharmacist.
