Greetings from Dean Rick G. Schnellmann

As we prepare to celebrate the Thanksgiving holiday this week, we have much to be thankful for at the UA College of Pharmacy.

This year, more than 250 alumni, faculty, students and friends attended Homecoming on the Health Sciences campus. I know a great many more of you celebrated with us in spirit. I’m grateful to everyone who helped make the weekend a success.
As thrilled as I am about the event itself, I’m even happier that so many of our students choose to participate in Homecoming activities. The College’s legacy is kept alive by students who are engaged in all aspects of their College experience and who stay connected with us as they progress throughout their careers.
Our students are the future of the pharmacy profession and will one day have the opportunity to impact and inspire future PharmCats, pharmacists, health practitioners and scientists. I deeply appreciate these students, as well as the alumni and volunteers who give their time, talent, and financial support to keep our College on the leading edge of pharmacy education and research.
Prior to Homecoming, the College hosted our National Advisory Board, which is comprised of pharmacy leaders, alumni and friends of the College. This important group advises me and our leadership on strategic initiatives for the college. We had a lively discussion around student and alumni engagement and brainstormed ideas to help mentor students earlier in their career. Ideas included coordinating NAB and alumni-hosted networking events after hours and at national conferences, and increased alumni mentorship programs or guest speakers. College staff will be working to facilitate many of these ideas in the future and we hope you will participate.
Homecoming and NAB photos are now online; click here to view them.
You are representatives of our College and I appreciate your enthusiasm and participation in these important events.  I hope you feel a sense of pride and excitement when you reflect on your experiences at our College.  Thank you for the impact you help us make throughout Arizona and beyond.

Preparing for the Financial and Economic Impact of Biosimilars

Though there are currently only 12 biosimilars approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), there are many more in the pipeline, and the oncology world is bracing itself for their impact. How will they be incorporated into practice?  What will it mean for the health care ecosystem?
A panel of experts—including clinical assistant professor and alumni Ali McBride, PharmD, MS, BCPS; graduate student Nimer Alkhatib, PharmD, MS, PhD (candidate) as well as Marc Earl, PharmD, BCOP and Kashyap B. Patel, MD, gathered at a preconference presentation at the Association of Community Cancer Centers 35th National Oncology Conference in Phoenix, to exchange their thoughts on the practical and theoretical considerations involved.
