1. President’s Message
 November has been a tumultuous month here in Alberta with the province’s Budget 2019 landing on our doorsteps on October 24th. Once the dust settled, post-secondary institutions faced a five-per-cent cut in 2019-20, differentially applied, with further reductions in each of the next three years, to a total of 12.5 per cent by 2022-23. The notion of an austerity budget is certainly not unique to Alberta universities and colleges – post-secondary institutions across the country face the challenge of trying to do more with less (and less). As engineering educators, we must be even more creative in how we deliver our courses and programs in this environment.
In this regard, and on a much more positive note, I had the pleasure of attending the Project Buildathon at McGill University in November. This was not only a much-needed distraction from our provincial woes, but also an excellent opportunity to get the creative juices flowing with a group of enthusiastic engineering educators, administrators, and students. The Project Buildathon workshops provide engineering educators a space to find alignment and work collaboratively around common priorities – exactly what we need during these challenging times. This workshop was the third in a series of Project Buildathons organized by Steve Mattucci and the CEEC (Canadian Engineering Education Challenge) – the first was in Toronto in December 2018, and the second was at CEEA-2019 Conference in Ottawa. As well, it was the first to pilot a “regional model” to make these events more accessible to engineering educators across the country. I am currently working with Steve on organizing a Western region Project Buildathon (stay tuned!) and on strengthening CEEA’s links with the CEEC.
If you haven’t already done so, I encourage you to visit the CEEA-2020 conference website and consider submitting a paper or workshop proposal (more information on this conference is provided in this newsletter).

CEEA-ACEG 2020 - June 18-21, 2020, Montreal, Canada
Fostering students’ ownership of their learning
Concordia University & McGill University
The 2020 Canadian Engineering Education Association/Association canadienne de l’éducation en génie’s Annual Conference will be held jointly at Concordia and McGill University, in Montreal, Qc., from June 18-21, 2020, with the theme of “Fostering students’ ownership of their learning.” We are gathering to discuss how to best train self-reliant graduates, who will become the leaders of tomorrow, and who will define a path of future discovery in scientific, engineering, and design-oriented fields, while making innovative, socially-responsible contributions to the engineering profession, and to society at large.
Join us in Montréal in June of 2020, to continue to discuss our community’s progress in training the Engineers of tomorrow.
Important Dates:
- Extended abstracts for all types of presentations proposals due: December 9, 2019
- Notification of acceptance of abstracts provided to authors on the abstracts: January 17, 2020
- Workshop proposals due: February 1, 2020
- Submission of full papers from authors opting to undergo a full paper peer review due: February 10, 2020
- Feedback provided to authors who opted for a full paper peer review process due: March 16, 2020
- Registration opens: April 1, 2020
- Submission of papers requiring revisions under the full paper peer review process, submission of final papers which underwent abstract review only, and submission of poster PDFs: April 6, 2020

3. Announcements
a. CEEA-ACEG Teaching and Research Institutes 2020
Save the date! The annual engineering teaching and engineering education research institutes will be held on Wednesday, June 17 in Montreal, just ahead of the Annual Conference. These full-day workshops are a great opportunity to hone your skills and learn with colleagues from across Canada and beyond. Each institute is led by a team of experienced and enthusiastic engineering educators. The institutes serve as a great way to advance teaching practice or kick-off the design of a research project, but anyone wishing to learn a little more about engineering teaching or educational research is welcome. Further details and registration will be announced soon – watch the CEEA-ACEG website for details!

b. Canadian Engineering Education Challenge (CEEC) Project Buildathon 3 Update
On Friday November 15th the "Canadian Engineering Education Challenge (CEEC)" hosted the 3rd successful Project Buildathon at McGill University in Montreal! 18 engineering educators from 8 different institutions attended to find alignment of priorities and learn from each other around the theme of: Teamwork and Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion. Tenure Track Educational Leadership Positions
The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of British Columbia, is currently hiring outstanding individuals into three tenure-track Educational Leadership (EL) positions, one for each of these areas:
- Societal and Environmental Impacts of Engineering
- Engineering Design
- Engineering Technical Communications
People hired into these EL positions are expected to teach courses and also to engage in activities at UBC and elsewhere that advance innovation in teaching and learning. Each position is at the instructor rank. For EL faculty at UBC, career progress involves moving from the instructor to senior instructor rank and then to the professor of teaching rank. 1. Le message du président
Le mois de novembre a été plutôt mouvementé ici en Alberta avec l’arrivée du budget 2019 provincial, le 24 octobre. Quand la poussière est retombée, les établissements postsecondaires ont fait face à des compressions de cinq pour cent en 2019-20 qu’on a appliqué différemment, et des compressions additionnelles sur les trois prochaines années, qui représentent un total de 12,5 pour cent d’ici 2022-23. Le concept d’un budget austère n’est certes pas réservé qu’aux universités et aux collèges en Alberta ; partout au pays, les établissements postsecondaires doivent trouver les moyens d’en faire davantage avec de moins en moins de ressources. Dans un milieu semblable, nous devons, comme enseignants du génie, faire preuve de grande créativité en matière de prestation de nos cours et de nos programmes.
C’est dans cette optique — et sur une note plus positive d’ailleurs — que j’ai eu la chance d’assister au projet Buildathon à l’Université McGill en novembre. C’était non seulement une distraction nécessaire des déboires provinciaux, mais une excellente opportunité de stimuler la créativité avec un groupe d’enseignants du génie, de gestionnaires et d’étudiants fort dynamiques. Les ateliers de projets Buildathon offrent une opportunité aux enseignants du génie un milieu pour travailler de façon alignée sur des priorités partagées et c’est précisément ce dont nous avons besoin en ces temps difficiles. Cet atelier fut le troisième d’une série de projets Buildathon qui fut organisé par Steve Mattucci et le Défi canadien d’éducation en génie (PECO) ; le premier s’est déroulé à Toronto en décembre 2018 et le deuxième a eu lieu lors de la conférence 2019 de l’ACEG à Ottawa. Il a également servi d’essai du « modèle régional » afin de rendre ces évènements plus accessibles pour les enseignants du génie partout au pays. Steve et moi collaborons présentement sur l’organisation d’un projet Buildathon pour la région de l’Ouest (restez à l’affut !) et à la solidification des liens entre l’ACEG et le PECO.
Si ce n’est pas déjà fait, je vous encourage à jeter un coup d’œil au site web sur la conférence 2020 de l’ACEG et peut-être même de remettre un article ou une idée d’atelier (de plus amples renseignements sur cette conférence sont fournis dans ce bulletin).

Favorisant l’appropriation estudiantine de l’apprentissage
L’université Concordia & L’université McGill
La conférence annuelle 2020 de l’Association canadienne d'éducation en génie / Canadian Engineering Education Association se tiendra aux Universités Concordia et McGill, à Montréal, du 18 au 21 juin 2020, et aura pour thème « Favorisant l’appropriation estudiantine de l’apprentissage ». Nous nous réunirons pour discuter comment former des diplômés autonomes, qui deviendront les leaders de demain qui traceront les voies de la découverte en sciences, génie et design, tout en contribuant de manières innovantes et socialement responsables à la profession d’ingénieur et à la société en général.

3. Annonces
a. Les instituts d'enseignement et de recherche 2020 de l’ACEG-CEEA
Réservez la date ! Les instituts de l’enseignement du génie et de la recherche en enseignement du génie auront lieu le mercredi 17 juin à Montréal, juste avant la conférence. Ces ateliers d’un jour complet présentent une opportunité pour parfaire vos talents et apprendre parmi des collègues de partout au Canada, et d’ailleurs. Chaque institut est dirigé par une équipe d’enseignants du génie dynamiques et chevronnés. Les instituts sont utiles pour l’avancement des pratiques d’enseignement ou pour lancer un projet de conception, mais toute personne désireuse d’en apprendre davantage sur l’enseignement du génie ou sur la recherche en l’enseignement est bienvenue. b. Le projet Buildathon 3 du Canadian Engineering Education Challenge (CEEC)
Le Défi canadien d'éducation en génie (PECO) a organisé avec grand succès la troisième édition de leur évènement <<Project Buildathon>> à l'université McGill le 15 novembre 2019. 18 éducateurs en génie provenant de 8 institutions différentes ont participé à l'évènement afin de déterminer leurs priorités et à apprendres les uns des autres au sujet de travail en équipe et en matière d'équité, de diversité et d'inclusion. Vous pouvez découvrir en quoi consiste ces évènements et tous les détails de l'évènement du 15 novembre dernier en consultant cette courte vidéo (durée de 3 minutes).

Postes de leadership éducationnel menant à la permanence
Le département du génie civil de la University of British Columbia (UBC) est à la recherche de candidats exceptionnels pour combler trois postes en leadership éducationnel (EL) menant à la permanence, dans les trois domaines suivants:
- Les impacts sociétaux et environnementaux de l’ingénierie
- La conception en ingénierie
- L’ingénierie des communications techniques
