Recently I got a bit anxious to put it mildly.
It was a matter of the confluence of a whole lot of work pressure, the fact that I was injured and could not get my regular runs in, and on top of that a long weekend with too much food, too many sweet treats and irregular sleep. A recipe for trouble.
The result was that feeling of impending doom. Anxious times! Too much was happening all at the same time and it felt like I was losing control.
What to do?
After a quick prayer, I started self-coaching of course! I reckoned that what’s good for my clients must be good for me too! Practice what you preach, Nico!
Step one was to breathe and to stretch and to relax. To refocus. To move my body and to get some quiet. I put in a monster nap. Then I focussed on the anxiety. This was a legitimate emotion I was experiencing. What was it trying to tell me? How could I move out of it?
I came to the conclusion that I was supposed to feel anxious. Lots was going on! I however did not have to stay there. I came up with a few action steps. I immediately started feeling better, more in control. As I rolled out my plan, my anxiety disappeared and the sun started breaking through again. The joy was there, at the other side of the dark clouds!
What do you do when you go into a negative emotional state? Can you also get curious about that emotion, so that it can help you find your way back to joy again?
Perhaps my approach can be helpful for you.
