Where is the joy in uncertainty and chaos?
We are living in unsettled times. On top of what the pandemic has been bringing us, here in our neck of the woods we recently learnt a new term. If you’ve never experienced an “atmospheric river” before, you should come for a visit. It is mind blowing to see so much water simply being dumped on an area like we’ve seen here in the last few weeks.
It has caused chaos. Farms were not only flooded, submerged is a better term. Animals and crops were lost. Bridges and roads simply crumbled and disappeared downriver. Complete towns were flooded and had to be evacuated. People were stranded for days, sleeping in their cars, between mudslides on the highway. Helicopters had to work day and night to rescue.
Now where is the good news in all of this? Is there any joy to be found when suffering is all around you?
A constant theme started emerging. People, ordinary people, volunteers, professionals — everyone and anyone, simply stepped up to help. Money is pouring in to support the efforts. The army even built a dam across the highway. It’s basically a giant plastic pipe filled with water and called a Tiger Dam.
During the worst of times, the best of humanity is showing. When we all have a common challenge to overcome, there is no division. We simply get on to do what is needed. It is a place of joy for sure! When you reach that place where you do not think about your own losses and uncertainties anymore, but simply help whomever and wherever you can, you will find true joy!
