Falcons Vs Griffith Easts
Well done to everyone that played in the inter-club social match against Griffith this year.  The game was played in honor of our ex-pat, Charles Anderson and the much coveted Golden Chuck trophy was introduced.  The game was  played under some very hot conditions with both teams trying their best in a friendly spirit.
Griffith were the eventual winners taking home the trophy this year, we hope you enjoy it guys as we will be trying our best to have it return to Albury next year!
Thank you also goes to the organisers, cookers and cleaner-uppers of the BBQ & to Greg's Take Away for the donation of the onions.

Week one of senior hockey is done and dusted!  Well done to all that played on the weekend in what ended up being some very warm conditions.

We had some mixed results on the scoreboard with Div 3 Women losing to Beechworth, Div 3 Men going down to Norths in a close one, Div 2 Women with a convincing win over Wombats, Div 2 Men with a 1-0 win over Wombats, Div 1 Women two - 0 up over Wombats and Div 1 Men in a close 1-0 loss to Wombats.

Good luck to our juniors as they embark on their first round of junior hockey this week.

Juniors Playing Seniors/Students & Apprentices - $175

Club Day
We are lucky enough to be having our Club Day early this year!  While we appreciate it will be hard to get organised for all of our fantastic cooks, we think we will be hopefully more likely to have a beautiful sunny day and hopefully sell out!

The stall will be running in line to previous years with egg and bacon rolls for brekkie, snags and burgers at lunch and donations welcome for lots of yummy baked goods!

If you are able to bake for the day or have any other items that you wish to donate please drop off on the day.  Don't forget to mark your goods with a list of ingredients or mark if gluten free etc.  Ideas for items we have had (other than baked) in the past to get the ideas flowing have included fruit, vegetables, "inners" (great for the sewers out there) and beanies.

There will also be a roster put out shortly for volunteers on the BBQ so please let the fundraising committee know if you would like to help out.

Thank you, we look forward to another successful Club Day.

Reminder For Rule Changes for 2017

Hockey Albury/Wodonga will adopt Hockey Victoria following rule changes:

1. Stick above the shoulder
Extend this to include all full field games (except for modified games – e.g. U9). As per FIH Rules a player may stop, receive or play the ball in a controlled manner in any part of the field when the ball is at any height including above the shoulder unless this is dangerous or leads to dangerous play).

The "tomahawk" hit will be permitted in all U12, U14 and U16 grades. The "tomahawk" shall not be permitted in U9 grades.

Some additional new rules -

1.) The ball can be played at above shoulder height now in all divisions (except U9). It is not allowed to be hit out of the air at this height but you can attempt to stop it.

2.) Attacking free hits inside the 5m mark around the circle.
The ball must travel 5m before entering the circle (this includes 5 x 1m drags etc) or has touched a defender. It can be played by as many attackers as you like but it still has to travel 5m.

3.) Defending free hits inside the 5m mark around the circle.
Everybody must be 5m away accept for any defenders that were inside 5m from the infringement. They may stay as close as they want as long as they stay within the circle and do not play at the ball until it has traveled 5m. However if the ball takes time to retrieve and place back at the place of the infringement for the free hit to be taken (around 5-7 seconds) this is classed as a reset and all defenders must be 5m.
This rule was designed to keep the game flowing and not disadvantage the attackers by having to wait for the defenders to move 5m if the ball stayed at the place of the infringement, hence if it takes time to reset then this advantage has disappeared so everyone has time to move 5m.

4.) The HAW Umpire Director has requested for umpires to get tougher on defenders playing the ball over the back-line intentionally. This results in short corner and when umpiring the decision has to be based on the intention of the defender ie. swinging tackle towards the back line = no where else the ball could have gone so it is intentional.

5.) Slide/diving tackles that take down a player is an automatic yellow card

6.) There is no such rule as you cannot tackle from behind. You can tackle from anywhere but you have to be in a position so as you do not bring the player down etc. (the tackler if in position early and the player with the ball collides with them is still the tacklers right of way). This rule is common sense and nothing has changed really except umpires have to remember you can tackle from behind (there are some still stuck in the past with this one)

Umpires for 2017

Hockey Albury/Wodonga have asked us to nominate 4 people (don't have to be players) to umpire A Grade matches during the season. Please let Matt Bardy know if you are willing and able.  Kevin Mason and co. will be around to help you finesse your understanding of the rules if needed. Also see HA website for excellent references/videos etc.
Thank you to the following supporters of Falcons Hockey Club.  Please click on the logos to be taken directly to these businesses websites!
