Jessie Dishaw - Artist Statement

Jessie received her Bachelor of Visual Art from the University of Regina in 2001. She then promptly flew to South Korea for “one year" of teaching English, which surprised her by turning into a 12 year ESL teaching career. She returned to Canada in 2014 pregnant with her second child and with her husband and two year old daughter in tow. After the birth of her second child Jessie decided to switch gears and pursue art as her full time career.
Jessie’s work has generally focused on issues of self, based on her own experience.  She was diagnosed with PMDD (Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder) in her mid twenties, it is described as PMS on steroids, it is like being bi-polar on a monthly cycle. She has struggled with depression tied to her disorder, but has found talking openly about her mental health issues connected her with others and helped her feel less alone in her fight.
She recently created four large mental health based embroidery pieces for a electrical box cover for the City of Regina.  Her electrical box art can be found at the corner of 12th and Scarth St.
Jessie believes everyone has their own hidden struggles and we should above all be kind. Come talk about mental health, kindness, and create your own embroidery art.

Join COR in welcoming her to the studio Thursday July 18th, from 1-5 pm!!
