WINTER CYCLING MENTORSHIP PROGRAM

Pairing seasoned winter cyclists with novices

We're teaming up with Bike Edmonton to match Edmontonians who have winter cycling experience with folks who want to give it a try.

It’s free.

HOW IT WORKS:

  1. PANEL AND MEET-N-GREET SESSION
    Friday, February 28 (7-9pm)
    Bike Edmonton South Community Workshop

Seasoned winter-cyclists will cover the how-tos in a panel discussion. Then the mentors will be paired with novice winter-cyclists to answer any questions and problem solve one-on-one.

  2. KNOWLEDGE SHARING
    February 28-March 13

A month for the new winter cyclists to try out what they heard and learned at the panel session. They have a chance to ask questions and get insights from their mentor via email over the month.

  3. GROUP RIDE
    Saturday, March 14 (11am-12pm)
Meet at the Bike Edmonton South Community Workshop

A one-hour group ride with all the mentors and mentees.

WHAT YOU NEED TO PARTICIPATE:

  • must be 18+
  • have a working bike
  • be willing to commit to the five hours needed to complete the program

ACTIVE PLACES

Spaces supporting Edmontonians to use active transportation

Each month in 2020, Paths for People is spotlighting an organization, business or group who's making it a little easier for Edmontonians to get into active transportation.

ENBRIDGE CENTRE

With the redevelopment of the century-old Kelly and Ramsey buildings into the Enbridge Centre, the 25-story LEED® Gold Certified office building integrated facilities to support active transportation:

BIKE SHARE

Enbridge Centre tenants can sign-out a bike for use downtown between 8am-6pm, Monday-Friday. There are 8 bikes available for use between May and October each year.

The Bike Share Program is free for all building tenants (they just need to complete a waiver).

This program is designed to encourage the use of the bike lanes in the downtown core. Each bike has an integrated lock to secure the bike while out on the town.

INDOOR BIKE LOCK-UP

A secure, indoor bike locker located in the building parkade. It’s 100% secure and accessible only with a programmed key card.

It costs $20/month to use.

The bike room also has bike repair station, lockers, showers and towel service.

There are 212 people currently using the bike room and its facilities.

SPEED CHANGE

Creating an inclusively designed and regulated transportation system

At the Community and Public Services Committee on February 26, the City of Edmonton has the opportunity to finally move forward on new data-driven, evidence-based speed limit regulations to help achieve Vision Zero goals.

TWO PROPOSALS:

  1. a blanket speed-limit reduction, from 50km/h to 40km/h, on residential and collector streets (city administration proposed).

  2. reducing the speed-limit to 30km/h on residential streets inside core neighbourhoods but to also leave the speed at 40km/h on residential streets outside this zone (aka #YEGCoreZone).

We believe a residential speed limit of 50 kph is not acceptable for any Edmontonians and the best option is a city-wide residential limit of 30 kph.
P4P's perspective on Speed Limit Changes

HOW TO SHOW YOUR SUPPORT FOR LOWER SPEED LIMITS:

  • Share your support to social
    Post on your social media

  • Connect with your ward councillor
Email your Councillor and tell them you support reduced speed limits

  • Speak at council
If you'd like to register to speak on February 26, sign-up here

You can connect with YEGCoreZone's Julie Kusiek at liveablestreetsedmonton@gmail.com to coordinate your main message as council prefers less repetition from speakers
