DYW D&A Business Newsletter
December 2020

Welcome

Welcome to the DYW Dundee and Angus newsletter. It has been a difficult year for all of us, but especially young people with school closures, exams cancelled any many leaving school with little idea of what to do next because the options usually open to them just didn’t exist. At DYW we would like to take this chance to thank local businesses for their help over the past year, providing careers insight and support to young people, so that they do go on to a positive destination and have a better idea of the career path they would like to take. However, we still have a huge job ahead of us, so if you think you can get involved in any way, please contact us for a chat. From the whole team here at DYW – Hilary, Marthe, Lynn, Michael and Melissa, we wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a peaceful, relaxing New Year.

Career Inspiration Volunteers Needed

We are looking for more short career films or case studies to add to our Career Inspiration Series! We want to hear from individuals from all industry sectors to really showcase the variety of careers available to young people. So, if you are doing a job now that your young self would have never imagined - we would love to hear from you! To see some of the films in our library already click here.

360 Video Opportunity!

DYW are working hard to try and virtualise our offer in today’s climate to make our services accessible to all. As part of our efforts to adapt we are planning to produce a series of 360 videos that could be used in schools, career fairs and other events to showcase different work places and give young people a really immersive experience without having to leave their house/school!

Our hopes are that these 360 videos will be suitable for use inside VR headsets and online via the likes of YouTube and Facebook. We are currently looking for businesses in Dundee & Angus to get in touch if they are interested in being featured in one of these videos.

This is a great opportunity to showcase your business and you will have a great tool at the end of this that you can use to promote your business going forward – at no cost to you!

Please email the DYW team (contact@dywda.co.uk) if you are interested!

Disability Employment Gap PSP Survey

Disability Employment Gap PSP would appreciate it if you could take a few minutes to complete the following survey.

This survey will help to gather important information about the current baseline regarding the transitions of disabled young people into the workplace. There are further details about the Disability Employment Gap Public Social Partnership (PSP) in the link

All views and experiences are welcome, and responses would be appreciated as soon as possible as they have to complete the research this calendar year.

Disability Employment Gap PSP are also looking for at least 12 employers who would like to volunteer to be interviewed on the same subject so please contact Fiona Allan directly if you would be interested in being involved.

DYW Webinars

We are delighted to announce that in the run-up to Christmas we will be launching two brand new DYW employer webinars for 2021. As a previous DYW workshop delegate, we are inviting you to reserve your place for these interactive new sessions in advance of the official launch next week.

Remotely Onboarding Young People

This year has seen many changes to our working lives and a significant portion of the workforce moving their desks from the office to the living room. The shift to remote working has seen many employers faced with the challenge of onboarding new members of staff remotely rather than in-person. The induction of a new recruit, particularly of a young person moving into their first job, can make or break their experience with the organisation.

DYW has developed a new, interactive workshop in response to this challenge to provide employers recruiting young people with practical guidance on what to include in an effective remote onboarding process .

Tuesday 21st January: 13:30-16:00

Thursday 11th March: 13:30-16:00

Intergenerational Working in a Remote Working World – Limited time only, delivered in partnership with Get the Gen

In challenging times, people, and teams, like you and yours, can add more value to your customers and business by learning how to work more effectively together. This interactive workshop will focus on how you and your team can work more effectively together by understanding the generational traits we all have and the impact of these on team effectiveness.

The session will challenge you to think differently about your approach to each other and ultimately help you to be more effective in a team and how to feel more connected remotely especially during times of workplace change.

Thursday 26th January: 9:00 – 12:00

Thursday 25th March session: 9:00 – 12:00

To book a space on any of the webinars above, please email dyw@edinburghchamber.co.uk with the name of the webinar and date you wish to attend.

Career Ready Needs Dundee Mentors

With stark and potentially long-term rises in youth unemployment, supporting young people’s prospects is more important than ever before, as recognised by the Young Person’s Guarantee in Scotland.

Career Ready have been working hard to play our part to grow our support for young people, connecting them to the world of work whilst still at school. Their focus is on those who do not have the network and opportunities they deserve for their talents to be realised. Through the gift of a mentor and a paid internship from their amazing employers, young people can be optimistic, confident and selective about their futures. To do this, Career Ready need more amazing organisations to provide mentors and a paid internship for students across Scotland.

Career Ready have years of experience and evidence this support changes young people’s lives. What’s more, Career Ready can support organisations build a diverse talent pipeline and develop their employee volunteers too. Check out their Scotland Impact Report 2019.

Find out more about them and the benefits of supporting Career Ready by looking at our employer flyer.

If your organisation could help shape the lives of young people in Scotland, get in touch with Career Ready at dawn.forester@careerready.org.uk
