Happy New Decade and Happy Lunar New Year!
Mandy and Jonathan Chew here :)
Happy 1st Month of the New Decade! Hope you all are off to a fantastic start. Life is a gift and we should all strive to be our better selves. A colleague of Jonathan's sent him a copy of Always and Never by Lisa Shumate which shares the 20 Truths for a Happy Heart.
We're putting the first 5 truths here as a way to, as Shumate so eloquently says in her book, remind ourselves that a happy heart has a unique and universal purpose in "perpetual demand -- the herculean might and humane calling to lift up others."
ALWAYS be in charge of your thoughts.
NEVER forget that you are in charge of the way you think and that a healthy mind requires ongoing fertilization.
ALWAYS listen before speaking.
NEVER dominate conversation -- you have two ears and one mouth for a reason.
ALWAYS follow the Golden Rule: "Treat others the way you'd like to be treated."
NEVER let the mean acts of others cause you to break the Golden Rule.
ALWAYS tell the truth.
NEVER gossip or waste time with those who do.
ALWAYS do as you say you will.
NEVER undermine the trust others place in you by not keeping your word.
So as we enter this new decade, let's remember to lift up everyone around us especially when they need it most.
and lastly, Happy Lunar New Year! It's the Year of the Rat but Disney has made it a grand celebration of the Year of the Mouse. Out of all the different videos out there, Apple's commercial called "Daughter" made us tear up a little. Nike's commercial was pretty good too. Here's to a fantastic new year and new decade!
P.S. - For those of you just joining, welcome to this week’s edition of our bi-weekly newsletter, The Positopian, where every few weeks, we share the most recently published positive news, fiction, resources, & insights to help you become the best version of yourself!
A Positive Thought We're Pondering This Week—
“We are what our thoughts have made us; so take care about what you think. Words are secondary. Thoughts live; they travel far.” ~ Swami Vivekananda
This Apple short film has a very heartwarming ending, so even though it's 8 minutes long, just stick with it until the end :)
Quote from Article: “research shows that goal pursuit, not contemplation, predicts purpose in life. If life is feeling purposeless, putting one foot in front of the other toward the pursuit of hardwired social needs might restore purpose.”
Quote from article: “The people who have been made larger by suffering are brave enough to let parts of their old self die. Down in the valley, their motivations changed. They’ve gone from self-centered to other-centered. At this point, people realize, “Oh, that first mountain wasn’t my mountain after all. There’s another, bigger mountain out there that is actually my mountain.” The second mountain is not the opposite of the first mountain. To climb it doesn’t mean rejecting the first mountain. It’s the journey after it. It’s the more generous and satisfying phase of life. And it can happen at any age.”
Amazing Humans —
"All Dressed Up" - Dr. Robert Parry
Although the pen may not be mightier than the scalpel, pediatric surgeon Dr. Robert Parry always takes a moment to make sure a scar isn't the only lasting memory of a child's surgical procedure. Parry estimates he has created dressing drawings for more than 10,000 patients.
A Silicon Valley startup has completed what appears to be the first commercial freight cross-country trip by an autonomous truck.
See videos of the software and functionality of an autonomous vehicle in a demonstration drive by NVIDIA staff on public roads and highways in Santa Clara, Calif. It's pretty crazy but a dozen companies have self-certified to test vehicles in Washington state.
Wolf Cukier, 17, an intern at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, last July, was tasked with going through data on star brightness from the facility’s ongoing Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite mission or TESS. The Scarsdale High School senior was looking at a foreign system located 1,300 light-years from Earth. He said he then observed what appeared to be a slight darkness in one of the system's suns.
The newly identified world is 6.9 times bigger than Earth and orbits two suns.
"Kindness, patience, and being the first to say 'I'm sorry' are the hallmarks of the Golden Rule, and the rewards to you are long-lasting: inner peace and a life of no regret."
~ Lisa Shumate
