Welcome to the ICNY Update

Working together to resist the Trump agenda and fight for democratic ideals.

Orwell's Newspeak

In his classic novel, "1984," George Orwell's Ministry of Truth had a straight-forward function: to eliminate and destroy words.  It was a simple conceit:  when words have no meaning, ideas cannot flourish and Big Brother is all-powerful.  Double-speak becomes the norm and truth itself its victim.

Early on in this administration, KellyAnne Conway introduced us to the extraordinary notion that there were both "facts" and "alternative facts."  It was the President who then branded all reporting with which he disagreed as "fake news."   And so it has come to pass that we have an Environmental Protection Administration bent on rolling back all regulations that protect our environment, a Department of the Interior overseeing a sell-off from sea to shining sea of federally protected lands, a Department of Labor working tirelessly to undermine workers' rights and benefits, and a Department of Housing and Urban Development that has overseen massive cuts to federal affordable housing projects.  The Consumer Protection Bureau has curbed consumer protection in favor of "free market" considerations and even the Center for Disease Control is being stripped of its ability to control disease, apparently because, according to President Trump, the coronavirus will miraculously self-cure once spring arrives.

It should therefore come as no surprise that our so-called Department of Justice under the leadership of Attorney General Barr has placed itself in the vanguard when it comes to sabotaging the rule of law and the fundamental underpinnings of our system of jurisprudence.  His interview to the contrary notwithstanding, Barr has again evidenced his willingness to subvert the integrity of his office in conformity to the demands of his master, who, post-impeachment, is acting with even greater arrogance and abandon than once deemed even possible.  Sure, this Big Brother can intervene in criminal trials; yes, of course, this Mad King sent Giuliani to Ukraine to dig up dirt.  And without question, Barr, at the behest of the president, can bring in investigators to investigate investigations.

According to George Orwell, "In times of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act."  This is the "revolution" for which Indivisible stands.  We need not be Superman to work tirelessly for Truth, Justice and the American Way.

Open Letter From An Indivisible

Dear Friends,

Donald Trump's and William Barr’s actions last week in interfering in the sentencing of Roger Stone represent perhaps the most dangerous move toward autocracy yet from this administration.  If we don’t have the impartial rule of law, we have nothing.

It’s time to take to the phones again.  Jerrold Nadler has called Barr before Congress—but not until March 31.  It’s imperative that the prosecutors who have resigned, as well as Jessie Liu, who was removed as US Attorney for DC, and others be called before the House to testify about what’s happening.  Now!
Here is contact information for Antonio Delgado, as well as the phone numbers, for those of you who have residences in the City,  for Jerry Nadler and Carolyn Maloney.  Please call them.  And pass this along to your friends!

Antonio Delgado:  202-225-2614
Jerrold Nadler:  202-225-5635
Carolyn Maloney:  202-225-7944
Postcards to Voters
10 of us churned out 200 postcards last week.  That is our contribution to 70,000 postcards that will arrive in this candidate's So Cal district before March 3rd.

NYT Times says “Writing Postcards Brings Voters Back From the Edge; It’s Sharpie Therapy"

And a quote from one of our local Indivisibles...

"When we focus on the things we are against, we inevitably move toward them because we let them define what will get our attention and energy. Instead, we need to focus on what we want and we will, just as inevitably, move in that direction."

"Our job, regardless of whether we find ourselves in a good situation or bad circumstances, is to increase the probability of a good outcome. There are no guarantees but we can choose to take actions that will increase the probability of a good outcome."
Blue Wave Lights
Light Columbia County in Blue
We need a blue wave in November to replace Trump and retake the Senate. You can help.

A blue light in your window says, “I’m part of the Blue Wave and I vote!”

It’s a sign without words, but says very clearly, "No more kids in cages, Medicare for All, and Black Lives Matter.”

Nationwide, people have started putting blue lights on their porches or in their windows to say they have had enough of Trump and his attacks on working people.
