Dear SSV friends,

As 2018 comes to a close, I find myself reflecting on SSV’s Net Positive Bay Area 2050 goals. Three years ago, when we set these audacious goals, they seemed far-fetched and improbable. The Net Positive goals are to produce more renewable energy than we consume, capture more carbon than we emit, and optimize water resources to ensure water resilience.

Then, this fall, with the passing of SB 100, the bar was raised. SB 100 sets a goal of phasing out all fossil fuels from the state’s electricity sector by 2045. And, Governor Jerry Brown upped the ante with Executive Order B-55-18, which aims to achieve carbon neutrality. Then, similar, bold ideas were briefly in the national spotlight with the Green New Deal. Although it ultimately failed, people are now talking about what’s possible with new ambition and determination.

After years of working on the Net Positive goals, much to my delight, the conversation suddenly accelerated and surpassed the Net Positive goals. I see this as a victory for SSV, and of course, the State of California. SSV will continue to advance our Sustainability Mobility Program; Water Replenish program; Multifamily Energy Upgrade Initiative; and Fully Electrifying Solar Homes project. And in 2019, I look forward to re-calibrating SSV’s goals.

I hope you will consider making a tax-deductible donation to SSV so that we can continue to create a brighter and more sustainable future. All donations will be matched by the SSV Board. Thank you, and Happy New Year!
