Good evening,  Cleveland Heights Democrats!  We have lots of information to share with you in this message.

It’s Election Season! Well, I am sure you are well aware that 2021 is an important election year for Cleveland Heights and the 11th Congressional District.  And a busy year, as we have 3 different election days to put on our calendars.

Turnout is often not as enthusiastic in the years with local elections, but truly these elections are massively important to each of us and our community.  Please make your plan now to update your voter registration if needed, to request a vote by mail ballot if that is your preferred way to vote, and to vote in each of the elections.
Bring on the Competition for Votes - Before I get into the details on endorsements, let me say that we are fortunate to have a very healthy competition for the Cleveland Heights Mayor, the 4 City Council seats and the 3 School Board seats, as well as the Congressional seat.  This is great news for voters, as we have an array of candidates among whom we can choose.  It also means that there naturally will be differences of opinion as to which candidate is the best choice.  When the time comes to vote on endorsements, there may be vigorous, competing perspectives, but hopefully, when and if we select a candidate or candidates to endorse, I hope that, as enthusiastic Democrats, we will rally behind the endorsed candidates.  At the end of the process, of course, voters make that choice for themselves.

What Vote Does a Candidate Need for an Endorsement?  -  You may have noticed that I just typed “when and if we select candidates to endorse”.  That is because our Bylaws say that endorsements are made by our Club if approved by a 60% majority of Voting Members present and voting at an endorsement meeting.  (For multiple candidate races, like City Council, the endorsement ballot will allow a Voting Member to vote for multiple candidates,  up to the number of open seats, and the same 60% rule applies for each candidate.)

Who Can Vote on Endorsements? So, if you’d like to vote on endorsements -  and I hope you do – you need to be a current Voting Member, meaning your dues for the current year are paid, at least 30 days before the endorsement meeting at which you wish to vote.  If you would like to pay your dues on line, click here

Opportunities to Volunteer – Candidates are seeking volunteers to assist with their campaigns and making efforts to reach voters to receive input and communicate their platforms.  Please take advantage of the many opportunities to be informed about the candidates and consider volunteering to assist those you find appealing.  We will have a more successful election season in our community if each of us is engaged.

Future Meeting Plans as COVID Restrictions Are Adjusted – As vaccine distribution proceeds at a good pace, we are hopeful that we soon will be able to resume meeting in person at the Rec Center.  To date, the Rec Center is not yet scheduling meetings for the public.  Stay tuned for further developments.
We are planning to hold our annual summer picnic - outdoors, of course -  tentatively on July 11.  We will advise you when that date is confirmed.
Thanks for your support for Cleveland Heights Democrats!  Let’s all work to turn Ohio blue!
