BRUTAL BLAST /// ISSUE 13
Version 188.8.131.52 Released!
Brutalist Framework version 2 is finally here! Let's take a look at the new brutality!
Each core CSS element (ex. flavors, butch, etc.) are available as individual unminified files in the core/css/dev folder. For development, you'd only need to load this:
A new component has been added to the core! Many browsers support symbols, so we created bIcons (Brutal Icons)! This allows you to render UTF-8 symbols as an icon, using a simple markup:
<i class="bi bi-icon-name"></i>
How the icons are rendered depends on the browser.
Some new flavors have been added:
- Sangria (formerly black-cherry)
- Sweden (color combo)
- BBQ-fire (color combo)
Two new animated backgrounds have been added: neon and earth!
Clipbox is no longer available, as it was not well supported and a bit difficult to work with.
New "Rumble" Effect!
There is a new "rumbling" effect that can be applied as a constant animation, hover effect, or on-click.
LET'S GET READY TO RUMBLE!
Font-family classes have been shortened. The "-text" is no longer needed (but still supported).
So, "arial-text" can now just be "arial".
Rotation classes have been re-worked. Example: "rl25" rotates 25 degrees to the left, and "rr25" rotates 25 degrees to the right.
Classes "paranoid" and "isolated" have been added. Paranoid adds margin to the left and right, and isolated adds margin to the to top and bottom.
Hover classes have been added to flip: "flip-hover" = horizontal flip on hover; "flip-up-hover" = vertical flip on hover.
Additional classes have been added to the B3Grid. Additional width and height classes are now available.
Max-width classes "container-1200" and "container-960" are now available for the Flexbox grid. These limit the container width to 1200px or 960px, respectively.
New "Tiles" Added to B3Grid
Tiles are unordered lists (apply class "tiles") that can be evenly divided into 3 ("thirds"), 4 ("fourths"), or 5 ("fifths") items per row. By default, tiles use 50% of the width, so there would be 2 tiles per row (if thirds, fourths, or fifths classes aren't applied). To create a four-column layout with only tiles, markup would look like this:
<ul class="tiles fourths">...list items ..</ul>
A new "micro" thumbnail size is now available ("thumbs-micro" and "micro-thumb").
Modals are no longer CSS-only, so they now need brutalist.js and start.brutalizing.js. Markup is different, as well. There are three parts needed: modal content, modal loader, and a launch modal link. Any type of content can be loaded within a modal, including creating custom layouts using the grid. Users can click on the X in the top right corner, or anywhere outside of the modal box to close it.
A new dynamic automatic layer switcher is available, as a new enhancement for Stacks. StackSwitch allows you to display 1 layer at a time for 3 seconds each, on an endless loop. Any type of content can be displayed within each layer, so it could be used to present multiple images as a slideshow or pretty much anything else!
Plugins are extensions for BF that allows for a little extra functionality and flare. All plugins require jquery.
This plugin allows any specific area on a page (using class "printer") to be easily printable, with a custom header and footer.
Formerly a part of BFX, this is now a standalone plugin. Make any text curvy!
The new sticky menu you see on the new site is a megamenu plugin. It supports multiple parent / child levels, and has very simple markup (compatible with Wordpress menus).
Starting Points Update
Starting points are simple templates for getting started on your next project. Some new templates have been added, including a lead capture template and event page. We'll be adding more in future versions.
Road Map: What's Next?
Now that version 2 is released, we're looking at putting more focus into development of Brutalist, a theme for Concrete5 CMS. This theme will use BF version 2, and will offer many configuration options and lots of flexibility in terms of layouts, blocks, and design. We're hoping for a release by Summer 2020.
We're also looking at resuming work on a PHP version of BF, but this is low priority at this time. It will be available on Github once released.
The next version of BF will (tentatively) have the following:
- More starting points (including a Product page template)
- More plugins (TBD)
- Ajax content
- Others TBD
