BRUTAL BLAST /// ISSUE 6
2017 Review and Outlook for 2018
I have been on a hiatus from working on BF these past few months, as I was pursuing my photography hobby. But... I'm back and working on version 1.5, which I am aiming to release in early January.
Brutalist Framework is Growing
All throughout 2017, BF has grown considerably, and seems to have a "cult" following. There has been feedback - both positive and negative - from all over the world. I just hope that BF has been useful in helping save developers a little time. I appreciate your comfortable compliments and brutal criticism!
BF is a Starting Point for Beginners
BF was created as a simple starting point for beginner and novice web developers. Essentially, it is a template to develop off of. Frameworks exist to help save developers hours of work.
What Constitutes Brutalism in Web Design?
There seems to be a lot of debate on this. There really isn't any "official" definition of brutalism when it comes to web design. Upon doing some Googling on BF, I have observed confusion in regards to users' perception of what Brutalist Framework is supposed to be. Some perceive it as a joke or satire, where others view it as a form of brutalism.
Design means limitless possibilities in how a website (or any other marketing medium) is presented. True "Brutalism" in web design is very arbitrary. It is open to creativity, so a brutalist website can have any appearance it wants!
Brutalist Framework's Design Approach
Brutalist Framework follows a "CRUDE" approach:
In other words, BF follows design principles that are the opposite of traditional proper web design principles and rules. Therefore, this allows for limitless possibilities with creativity.
- Cynically confrontational
- Roughly raw and rugged
- Uncomfortably ugly and unpolished
- Deliberately daring and damaging
- Extremely exasperated and embittered
What's Coming in 2018?
There are three big focuses: version 1.5, version 2, and documentation.
BF 1.5 will have some support for forms, responsive tables, tabs, and some various other improvements.
The big thing to look forward to is Brutalist Framework 2! This will have both PHP and HTML versions of the framework, so this should make it a bit easier for developing Wordpress themes. BF 2 will be an ideal starting point for PHP beginners.
I have plans to create and sell premium themes in 2018. These will most likely be sold via Envato Theme Forest. I also plan to resume work on a theme for Concrete5.
Other New Features
Starting with the release of 1.5, the Brutalist Framework website will add a new "Community" page where you can post comments and feedback.
There will also be a new Changelog and previous versions downloads area.
If you have suggestions for improvement or new features, head over to GitHub and put in a new issue request.
