Our garden is growing

Birch Lane received two grants this year that will help the school realize its goal of creating a new veggie garden beside the orchard. While the geo garden has served Birch Lane well, the space has become increasingly shady. The garden's new locale promises to be bright and get plenty of sunshine, perfect for veggies.

The school first received a $250 grant from HM Clause, a local seed company that is “dedicated to innovative and sustainable development of the highest quality vegetable seeds.”

Second, the school received a $2,000 grant from the Whole Kids Foundation.  The Austin Texas based independent foundation is funded by Whole Foods Market empowers schools and enable the school to pick nutritious food with Birch Lane students.

From the Principal
Birch Lane community:

We are in year two of implementing a program called Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports (PBIS). Our staff has been working to create the structure and framework and we are happy to be able to share with you our progress and to include the community in our endeavor.

To begin, we are not replacing the wonderful things that are the foundation of our social-emotional supports (Kelso, Friendship Week, etc). I think of PBIS as the umbrella under which we have our supports.

PBIS is a research based support system used in many school across the country. Our main goal is to systematize our celebrations, rewards, and behavior supports. It is through PBIS that some things like our Buddy Bench, the Respect song, the “Feathers” the Eagle costume, Eagle Expectation Assemblies, and Eagle Awards have become part of our culture.
