From the Principal

This morning began with a bike ride to school. 223 of our Junior students (and their parents!) riding bikes together. In chatting to several parents along the way, I was reminded that, as Trinity parents, we all have much in common. In particular, we all believe in the power of education to change lives. Education is the master key that gives you access to:
  • Know yourself
  • Know others
  • Know the world and how it works
  • Know God.
Education makes all the difference in a person’s life.
Every parent knows that the chief purpose of education is to humanise; to pass on our humanity and our cultural knowledge from one generation to the next. We catch our humanity from the people around us.
Education should empower us to become more fully human; to live lives of meaning and purpose. In the 4 Pillars of a Trinity education, we say that the purpose of education is for our students to develop a ‘tool kit’ for life. It’s not about filling a student with facts like you fill a bucket. It’s about helping them develop the tools to expand the dimensions and capacity of their ‘bucket’. To have a growth mindset, where our kids can break through their own self-imposed barriers and accomplish things that seemed impossible. At Trinity, we want our young men and women to live empowered lives in community with other people. We want to help them cultivate emotional intelligence, creativity, metacognition and a raft of interpersonal and communication skills.
And Christian schools have an inherent advantage when it comes to holistic education because the Judaeo-Christian tradition, going back more than 2000 years, has always been about educating the whole person. Valuing scholarship certainly. Developing the intellect, absolutely. But our Christian heritage has been about educating the whole person for more than 2000 years.
As an Anglican College, we value knowledge because we recognise that God has gifted us with an intellect. Further, we believe that God has created a universe that is ordered, intelligible and knowable (at least in part) by human minds.
As an Anglican College, we invite every person and we value every person, irrespective of their beliefs or background. Together we can celebrate that each person is created with dignity and is dearly loved by God.
We recognise that God is in the business of restoring and healing all creation. He has a plan for each and every one of us – to lead us into wholeness and right relationships with Him and with each other. Our humanity matters so much to God, that he chose to become one of us – in the person of Jesus – to rescue us from all the ways we hurt ourselves and hurt each other.
A secular education cannot anchor itself on such a grand human narrative. But a Christian education, more than any other, compels us to live lives of purpose, generosity and love.
And that is why holistic education makes all the difference.
I reminded our students last week that none of them are at Trinity by accident. They are here because someone in their family believes that holistic education is the master key to access opportunities and experiences for a rich life. I believe that a Trinity education is a gift that keeps on giving.

From the Director of Studies

Year 10, 11 and 12 Assessment Tasks
Across all courses in Years 10, 11 and 12, students have received assessment schedules that provide an overview of the assessment tasks in that subject for the year.  We are reaching that part of the term when students will be receiving notifications about specific assessment tasks that will be falling due over the coming weeks.  Students should maintain a dialogue with their teachers and make sure that they are very clear about the requirements of each task. 
If a student is unable to submit or sit an assessment task because of illness or mishap, there is a firm set of protocols to be followed; this is outlined in assessment policy booklets that have been distributed to all students in Years 10-12.  In the first instance, parents and caregivers are to contact the Director of Studies, Ms Kym Armstrong, or the Head of Senior School, Mr Malcolm Thomas, when it is identified that a student will miss an assessment task.

Year 12 Mid-Course Exams
Our Year 12 students have started the year with vim and vigour as they lead into the important assessment items that form the Mid-Course Exams.   The Mid-Course Exams start in Week 7 of this term.  Students have received the examination timetable; this is also available on the College website.

Disability Provisions for HSC Examinations
The Board of Studies offers special consideration for the examinations of students who are experiencing significant disadvantage because of conditions that impair their ability to perform in the examination setting.  In order to access this consideration, students must undertake an application process.  Students who think that they might be eligible are encouraged to speak to me. 

Year 11 & 12 Study Hall
The College is offering students in Years 11 and 12 the opportunity to work in a study hall environment 2 afternoons a week.  These sessions will take place from 3.15 to 4.30pm Tuesday and Thursday afternoons, downstairs in the south building of the Senior School.  Students will be able to access study and writing tips and will receive study assistance from the supervising teachers. 

NAPLAN 2017 – 9-11 May
In May 2017 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by all students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 in all government and non-government schools. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy learning of students in all Australian schools.

The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.
The tests will be conducted across Australia for all students from 9-11 May 2017.

 Language conventions
 (Spelling, Grammar  and Punctuation)
In the Numeracy tests, students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9, the Numeracy test is divided into two parts: one where a calculator is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator portion, the students should use the calculator that they currently use at school.
Friday 12 May – A ‘catch-up’ day is scheduled for students who missed a test or were absent on a test day.
Students may be considered for exemption from the tests if:
  • they are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or
  • they have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions that severely limit their capacity to participate in the tests.
All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments that reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be provided. Large print, braille and black and white versions of the tests are available for students with vision impairment.

Access to disability adjustments or exemption from the tests must be discussed with either Mr Steven Armstrong for students in Years 3 or 5, or Ms Kym Armstrong for students in Years 7 or 9, and a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents and carers in consultation with the principal. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, you must sign a parent/carer consent form. Consent forms are available from the College.

Year 7 Vaccinations
Students in Year 7 received a letter this week regarding vaccinations that will take place at the College on Tuesday 21 March. Consent forms need to be returned to Pastoral Care Tutors by Monday 13 March. The information we have received from Wodonga Council’s Immunisation Team is below.

The first round of school vaccinations is being conducted at this school on Tuesday 21 March 2017.  The following vaccines will be offered on this day:

 YEAR 7 MALE & FEMALE STUDENTS  BOOSTRIX (Diphtheria, Tetanus,  Whooping Cough) 1 DOSE ONLY
These vaccinations are funded on the National Immunisation Schedule. Should your child miss out on starting their vaccination course this year they will not be eligible to receive them for free in subsequent years. Parent information packs were sent home recently.
To consent to your child being vaccinated with one or more vaccines, please sign the relevant sections of the consent card.  The consent card must be completed, signed and returned to the school by Monday 13 March 2017. PLEASE FILL IN THE CONSENT CARD WITH BLUE OR BLACK PEN ONLY.
If you DO NOT wish to have your child vaccinated with one or more vaccines or if your child has already been vaccinated, please don’t sign the consent section on the consent card and return them to the school by Monday 13 March 2017.

The storyline
While on their family holiday, high school jock and basketballer star Troy and brainy Gabriella meet. They are two teens who are worlds apart but during a karaoke contest they discover their love for singing - and an interest in each other.
Back at school, Troy discovers that Gabriella is the new girl at East High and they both want to audition for the school musical - outraging the self-appointed rulers of the school play, Sharpay and Ryan. Sharpay plots to discourage them and wins the backing of the whole school as well as Troy's best friend Chad and Gabriella's new friend Taylor. Despite winning approval from the drama teacher during an accidental audition, the opposition from their peers is too great and Troy throws himself back into basketball. Gabriella, who is a scholastic superstar, is crushed by Troy's rejection and focuses on the decathlon competition.
Eventually, Chad and Taylor feel terrible that they've manipulated their friends for their own selfish needs and unite with their friends to help win the basketball game, the decathlon and have one last chance at a role in the musical. Their classmates rally and even Sharpay's iciness melts away. The whole school comes together as winners.

From the Junior School

The three R’s: in talking with students, parents and teachers there is a common theme that emerges in education. To underpin this simple fact is the wisdom that has come from our youngest and newest students at the College.

Respect for self: sometimes we lose this in the turmoil of a day. It is not about putting one-self first but seeing in ourselves what we expect in others.
Respect for others: being a true ‘Rainbow Fish’ and bucket filler. Not for some award or recognition but as part of our responsibility to each other.
Respect for Environment: respecting our stewardship of the environment but also respecting our community environment.

I was reminded of this at a recent Parent Induction where the important role parents have in engendering the learning environment for the students was discussed. We know (from the work of John Hattie) that parent respect for the school culture and willingness to be a positive part has a significant effect on the learning of their children.

The ride to school day is an example of this culture at the College and I hope on reading this that students, parents and staff enjoyed the camaraderie and challenge. A big thanks to Mr Thurling for organising another wonderful community event.



Students from Year 6 at Trinity have recently undertaken, an educational tour of the national capital. Students were given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage and democracy.
The group took part in a range of excellent experiences, including visits to the Australian War Memorial, National Museum, Questacon, the Australian Institute of Sport, Telstra Tower sightseeing, Australian Electoral Commission, and of course, Parliament House.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding of $20 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Dates for the Diary

BIPSA Swimming: This takes place on March 8. Good luck to all involved.
World of Maths: The Year 3 and Year 5 students will take part in hands on learning presented by an outside provider.
Junior School Assembly: On Tuesday 7 March, we will celebrate assembly at the Albury Campus. Starts at 2.15pm in the MPH. This assembly will be organised by 6SF.
Mortimer Shield: The school will enter teams in this gala day on Friday March 10.
Book Fair: this takes place during Week 6(next week) and all students are excited by the opportunity. Thanks to Mr Childs for setting up the Fair and organising the time over the week.

Chapel takes place in each A Week. Years 4-6 Monday at 2.15pm in the Library and K-3 Tuesday at 2.15pm in the Infants' Centre.

We are also making use of these times to present specific awards to students that relate to the Chapel Theme for the Semester (and for us all on our lives).

Wodonga Campus News

Public Holiday 13 March and Early Finish on 31 March
Please remember there are no classes on Monday 13 March due to the Labour Day Public Holiday in Victoria, and that Wodonga Classes finish at 2.10pm on Friday 31 March (in line with the start of Victorian school holidays).

Bus Travel
For those students who travel to school by bus please note that, due to the Victorian school holidays, there will be no school buses operating on the last week of Term One – from Monday 3 to Friday 7 April. Parents will need to make their own arrangements to get students to school.

Co-curricular activities are off to a good start, with Cricket, Cooking & Gardening and the Art Club in full swing.  We appreciate the support of parents and the involvement of as many of our students as possible. Lunchtime training has begun for students who play basketball for Trinity, and a lunchtime Art & Craft session has also begun, under the guidance of Miss Wheeler and Mrs Carroll.

Parent Teacher Interviews
The parent and teacher interviews are scheduled for after school on Tuesday 14 and Wednesday 15 March.  These interviews are short meetings – about 10 minutes. They provide an ideal opportunity for parents to:
  • learn more about your child’s academic, emotional and social development;
  • meet and get to know your child’s teachers;
  • help your child’s teachers understand more about your child;
  • make plans with the teacher about how you can both support your child;
  • further build a relationship with your child's school.
I encourage all parents to engage in the parent-teacher interview opportunity.

Choosing a Book to Read
Last Newsletter I spoke about The Five Finger Rule:
  1. Have your child read the front cover and blurb.
  2. Have him/her open the book to any page and begin to read.
  3. If he/she misses five or more words on a page, the book is a challenge right now.
  4. If he/she doesn’t miss any words, the book may be too easy.
  5.  If he/she misses three words, it is just right.
I’d like to take the discussion further by introducing the importance of engaging in reading.
Some students have difficulty connecting with a text because they see the reading of literature as an arduous task rather than enjoyable. These children can show signs of reading reluctance. However, once students develop fluency in reading, the research indicates that the more that they read, the stronger they become in their reading skills. This is why it is important that students be actively engaged in choosing books to read. If your son or daughter is a reluctant reader, here are some tips to assist in the choice of a suitable text for them to read:
  • Appealing covers and larger print;
  • The format is visually appealing. The artwork and illustrations are realistic, interesting and diverse;
  • The text is written clearly without long confusing sentences and sophisticated language;
  • Strong literary quality;
  • The opening of the novel/literature is exciting and draws in the reader;
  • The characters are realistic and the reader can relate to them;
  • The plot should be interesting and appealing. Plot is also developed through dialogue rather than long narrative descriptions;
  • Choose literature that explores the lives of other children;
  • Humour is present; and
  • There is one point of view - books are often written from the first person point of view.
Fundraiser Auction and Parents & Friends
The Fundraiser Auction Night, held over from 2016, will take place on Friday 11 August. This provides a long lead-in time to obtain additional auction items and to promote and sell tickets to the event. The night will be held in conjunction with the launch of the College P&F. Wodonga parents are invited to a P&F Consultation Meeting at 5.30pm on Wednesday 22 March in the Hall.

Senior School Swimming Carnival
Hoffman collected their trifecta of Senior School Swimming Carnival Championships. After rescheduling, the day still proved to be hot but not stopping students wanting to do their House proud. To accommodate the increased level of participation, the carnival began earlier with the 100 metre freestyle and 200 metre individual medley.

The College will be proudly represented by a very strong BIPSA and BISSA Swimming team, as it was with our Wodonga students having competed in Friday’s Upper Hume District Swimming Carnival. Our College swim teams will come up against some of the strongest swimmers in the Riverina and Hume Region next week and I would like to take this opportunity to wish them all the best!

The Border Independent Primary Sports Association (BIPSA) will now be known as the Riverina Associated Schools – Primary (RAS-P). The name change has come about due to Wagga Wagga Christian College withdrawing from BIPSA. RAS – P is also in line with our Combined Independent Schools (CIS) association.
Border Independent Secondary Sports Association, will continue to be known as BISSA as the College competes against Riverina Catholic schools prior to following the CIS representative pathway.
CIS 2016 Team of the Year
Congratulations to Conor Willis, George Flanagan and Sebastian Sproule who, as part of the winning 2016 CIS Primary AFL side at the NSW Allschools Championships, were named Primary Team of the Year at the CIS 2016 Awards Presentation Evening. By all accounts the boys represented themselves, the College and their coach, Mr Hillary, proudly, reliving the memories they formed with their team mates across the state.



Athletics Carnival
The College Athletics Carnival will be conducted at the Alexandra Park Athletics Complex. The Junior School Athletics Carnival will be conducted on Thursday, 23 March and the Senior School Athletics Carnival on Friday, 24 March.
Senior School students will again have to make their way directly to the Alexandra Park Athletics Complex (with a shuttle service also provided from the College). All students will be expected to be at Alexandra Park Athletics Complex by 8:45am. If they have nominated to participate in the first rotation of events they must be at the track by 8:20am for an 8:30am start.

CIS Primary Tennis Championships
The CIS Girls and Boys Primary Tennis Championships were held last Monday, 20 February. Congratulations to the five boys and five girls who have been selected to represent CIS at the NSW PSSA Tennis Championships, especially Trinity’s Ella Brown.
Ella and the team will travel to Gosford to contest the NSW All School Championship in early May. I’d like to take this opportunity to wish Ella all the best and I look forward to hearing back from her about the results of this experience; good luck Ella!

From the Library

A warm welcome and welcome back to all students and families from the Library for the start of the 2017 school year, and just a few weeks in, it is already shaping up to be an exciting year… and another busy one!
We have already had one significant change to the Library in 2017, with Mrs Janelle Parker moving over to take up a position as the Food Tech and Art Assistant with the College. Mrs Parker has been the Library Assistant for the past two years and I thank her for all of her hard work in this time and wish her the best in her new role. The Library will welcome a new face in the form of Miss Kate Walters for Term 1, in the role of Teacher Librarian, with a focus on working with our Junior School classes during their fortnightly library classes. Miss Walters was doing some relief teaching around the College last year and will be a familiar face to a number of our students and families.
Book Club
The College will once again be offering families the opportunity to purchase books and other materials through the Scholastic Book Club. Catalogues will be sent home twice each term and please be aware of the return date stamped at the top of these catalogues. Students can return their order form to the Front Office or to the Library with their payment, or use the online ordering and payment system, LOOP (order forms don’t need to be returned when using LOOP).
Book Fair
The College will once again host a Scholastic Book Fair this term, during which students and their families and friends will be able to purchase books and other materials. This will be the third year of Book Fairs here at the Thurgoona Campus, and I hope that this fair will be as successful and positively received as the past Scholastic Fairs. The Fair will take place during Week 6 of the term, with students and their families being able to purchase items on Friday 10 March. Please note that this is the only fair booked for the Thurgoona Campus for this year.
Outstanding Student Loans
Although the great majority of books loaned by students last year were returned before the Christmas break, there are still a number of outstanding loans from both campuses. Please try your hardest to locate and return these resources as soon as possible to the Library.

Trinity Anglican College Website Goes Mobile

We are pleased to announce the launch of our brand new website!  It may look the same on the outside, but a lot has changed under the covers.
The largest change that has been one of the most requested features, the ability to use the site on mobile devices.  That’s right, it now looks awesome on your phone.
We have a lot of other great features in the pipeline that will be released over the next 12 months - think parent portal.

French News

French Exchange trip 2016–2017
Twenty-one College families have just concluded the second part of the exchange. The Quinet students are enjoying Sydney as I write, and while their parents in Saintes are preparing to celebrate their homecoming, many Trinity College parents are saying “Phew!”
It was an intense two weeks’ return visit. The French students enjoyed wearing of our uniform! They relished cooking Aussie-style with Mrs Pearce and learning to play AFL courtesy of the Year 10 PASS group. They gave presentations throughout the College and on both Campuses on subjects as varied as French food and French artists.  They took part in some of our normal classes and completed set homework in the library, an important element, as they had missed a week of school.                                                              

They went to see sheepdogs working cattle on the Emerson property, and watched shearing taking place. They had a bush walk, which featured many interesting spiders and the skull of a fox. There was so much noise that all other animals had departed for the duration! They had a trip to Canberra and watched our Parliament in action as well as meeting The Hon. Sussan Ley. They had a tour of Bonegilla Migrant Centre and a lesson in sailing dinghies with Mrs Nevin-Lewis. They were due to take a tour through the high country to look at some elements of the Snowy River Hydro Scheme, but, faced with some exhausted teenagers, that devolved into a much-abbreviated tour and a swim in Lake Hume.
The farewell barbecue in Oddies Creek Park was a lovely occasion with families and students sharing stories and making plans for return trips. The farewell party in the morning featured several of our students climbing onto the bus with the French students and declaring that they were going too! There were tears as the minibus left the grounds, both in the minibus and among parents and students left behind.

It was a hugely worthwhile exchange because of the friendships made, the experiences shared and the mutual understanding reached during the whirlwind three weeks in France and two weeks in Australia. I thank all who offered to be host parents and all who supported us in so many ways, even while not directly hosting. Cathy Katsoolis and Nicky Dulhunty with their team were amazing with the school uniforms and welcome bags, Miriam O’Connell took magnificent photos, and Peter O’Neill was a huge support with organisation throughout. Thanks also to Justin Beckett who supported the project with enthusiasm, despite coming in halfway through. A final thank you to all staff who offered to take students into their classrooms and give them an experience of an Aussie Education.

I hope the project benefited the entire College and gave us all an insight into how small the world is and yet how big and varied. And, if it has given to our students itchy feet and an urge to explore the opportunities available in life, then that is exactly what I had hoped for.

Junior Science

Junior Science would welcome donations of the following:
  • Eggs!  Whole blown shells, yes we have access to chook eggs but would love to include other varieties.  They will live safely in the Bio display cupboard when not being viewed by classes.
  • Triangle and tambourine
  • Bread Making Machine or two – is anyone not using theirs?  Used for Year 6 Science
  • Old film canisters
  • Aluminium cans
  • Jars with lids
  • 600ml Pepsi or Coke bottles

Kitchen Garden Co-curricular

The Kitchen Garden Co-curricular group will operate for Year 3 and 4 students during Semester 1 over 12 weeks.
The program delivers hands-on food education in the kitchen classroom. The group will involve students, preparing a range of delicious dishes from seasonal produce, followed by a shared meal.  The program will operate on a Tuesday afternoons.
A program for Years 1 and 2 students will operate in Semester 2.

Shrove Tuesday in Year 1

Shrove Tuesday marks the commencement of Lent. Year 1 celebrated this event together by making delicious pancakes! We had wonderful support from parents and would like to thank all our parent helpers and Megan Salan for all their help. Students enjoyed pancake day rotating through four different activities.
  • Ryder said his favourite part of the day was eating yummy pancakes!
  • Alyssa enjoyed making the list of how to make pancakes.
  • Hugh. B enjoyed making the pancakes, stirring the bowl and watching them cook.

From the Canteen

During Term 1 students in Years K-2 will not be able to place canteen lunch orders on Fridays. This is due to the very large numbers of Junior students ordering on Fridays. Please order for your K-2 child on any other day of the week!  Sincere apologies for any inconvenience this may cause.
