January/February 2021

We Made it, Welcome 2021!

I am sure we are all thankful to be in a new year! We know last year was long and trying but together we made it through and we have a new year with new beginnings. We want to thank all of our clients and sitters for the support, continued care and community over this last year.
2021 not only brings a new year, but a year of celebration for us! The Pet Lady, Ltd. turns 30 this year! Back in 1991, company founder, Elizabeth Dunkle (Lauren's Aunt), decided to make The Pet Lady, Ltd. an official professional pet company and began the journey in pet care excellence.  Elizabeth knew there was a growing need for in home pet care for pet parents when they traveled or while they were at work, knowing that pets do best when left in their own environment. Over the years, Elizabeth not only grew The Pet Lady into the organization we are today, but gave back in so many way using her skills with pets.  Elizabeth helped clients train their dogs, set up a reading group for children who struggled with reading to read to shelter dogs, and helped to create the Animal Therapy program at Edwards Hospital.  Many of Elizabeth's dogs were part of this program, and Bella is still a therapy dog to this day with her new family at Edwards-Elmhurst Hospital. In 2015, Lauren took over after Elizabeth passed away. In the last 5 years, The Pet Lady, Ltd. continues to excel in pet care and our staff provides knowledge, care and professionalism with our human clients and fur-clients.  We are blessed with the continued support from our staff and clients to be able to uphold the standard Elizabeth put in place years ago.  We are very excited to be celebrating three decades of proudly serving Naperville, and five years proudly serving Lombard, Elmhurst and Villa Park.  Our hearts are full and we hope you will celebrate with us over the coming year!

January is National Train your Dog Month.  Our big tip for this month is make training a part of your everyday life with your dog.  This can be as simple as reinforcing sit, stay, down or to come when called. Continued training is not only a good tool to keep your pup up to date with commands, but it is good mental and physical stimulation for your dog.  The Association of Professional Dog Trainers offers amazing webinars to help assist with easy at home training in celebration of National Train you Dog Month and can be found here. Want to hear from a pet sitter and trainer on training? Check out Episode 5 of The Pet PawCast, hosted by Lauren Dunkle with special guest and former Pet Lady sitter, Ashley Butman!

Don't turn up your nose to your pets bad breath! Make your pets dental hygiene a priority with National Pet Dental Health Month in February. Your pets bad breath can be a signal to a more serious problem than just bad breath, it can lead to harm to organs.  It is always a good idea to start training your pet early to allow you to brush their teeth just as you would clip their nails.  Now, if your dog is anything like mine, the idea is better than the execution.  Your preferred veterinarian is always a good person to consult with but if you would like to read up more on your pets dental care visit the American Veterinary Medical Association site to learn more.

Cold Weather Tips for Pet Parents
Winterize Your Pets

- Provide extra food, as some pets have increased appetites during cold weather months
- Use sweaters, raincoats, hats or paw protection such as shoes or booties
- Buy heated water bowls for outdoor pets to keep their drinking water from freezing over
- Consider using heated beds for extreme cold weather
- Keep nails trimmed regularly.  It is difficult to maintain solid footing with long nails in icy conditions
