Parish Evangelization Coordinator Monthly Newsletter

November 2017

“The Church exists to evangelize!” - Bl. Pope Paul VI, Evangelli Nuntiandi

Dear Evangelization Coordinators,

Thank you for your important ministry.  Evangelization is urgent! Several of you have contacted me worrying that you and your parish aren’t doing enough and what you are doing isn’t happening quickly enough.  “Do not be afraid,” Jesus reminds us in the gospel.  As long as you are working with your pastor and other parish leaders, praying first and then creating and implementing an Evangelizing vision for your parish - one that Evangelizes the Evangelizers (those who attend) and creating strategies to look for those who have left or who do not know the Lord - then you are on the road to success for the Lord.

We are embarking on the holiday season. Pope Francis set the context several years ago when he said, “True joy does not come from things or from possessions, no! It is born from an encounter, from a relationship with others; it is born from feeling accepted, understood, and loved…because the other is a person.”  The Holy Father goes on to say, “Joy is born from the gratuitousness of an encounter.” (July 6, 2013)

Friends, is this not the ministry of all who embark on the urgent work of Evangelization…assisting in that encounter?   In our newsletter this month please find the letter mailed to clergy encouraging them to use Christmas as an Evangelizing opportunity. A SAMPLE Pew Card is attached.  This can be adapted and used to engage those who join us for an encounter with Jesus and his Church.

Please let us know how we, in the Office of Evangelization, can continue to resource you and your ministry.

As we give “thanks” to God we also ask God to bless our Evangelization efforts.

Fr. Dave

Advent and Christmas Pew Cards

Alpha in a Catholic Context
Who of us hasn’t heard the disastrous reports regarding declining numbers in church attendance?  However, in a few weeks, our pews will be filled for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.  These are Evangelizing opportunities as some will wander up to our Church doors like Joseph and Mary wondering if there is room in the inn.  These least “expected”, like the shepherds and the magi, will swell our crowds.

The attached letter talks about some best practices and suggestions to help us welcome these least expected, our brothers and sisters, during these great seasons of the Liturgical Year.

Please click here to read the letter and download the attached pew card.
On Saturday, October 21, Ascension of Our Lord Church graciously hosted an Alpha in a Catholic Context training session for parish leaders from across the Archdiocese.  A sizable crowd attended this training session, which gave parishes the resources they need to begin their own Alpha programs.  Alpha is a parish-centered tool for Evangelization based on hospitality, sharing, and open conversation in a comfortable and non-judgmental environment.

We look forward to hearing about and featuring the Alpha success stories from our pilot parishes.

Thanks again, to Mark Williams and Fr. Walter Austin at Ascension of Our Lord for bringing this training session to the Archdiocese of New Orleans!
