Parish Evangelization Coordinator Monthly Newsletter

October 2017

“The Church exists to evangelize!” - Bl. Pope Paul VI, Evangelli Nuntiandi

Evangelization Coordinator's Evening of Reflection

A word of thanks to all who attended the Coordinator’s Evening of Reflection on September 26, 2017 at St. Angela Merici Parish.  We are grateful to Fr. Beau Charbonnet and his staff for their hospitality. If you remember, Coordinator’s had requested a time to be to gather and to ask God’s blessings upon their particular parish ministry as they seek to assist pastors and parishioners to become evangelizers of others. As we have mentioned many times, Evangelization is not going to work unless we pray about it. So, we began our evening of sharing input and best practices with a significant time of prayer. Prayer can be formal or informal, verbal or nonverbal, active or contemplative. Prayer is communicating with God. Just as we talk and share with our best friends what is happening in our lives, so we talk and share with God. Just as we listen to our friends, so we are invited listen to God.

As in human communication, our communication with God can be expressed in a variety of ways. We communicate with God using words and songs, in imagination and silence, and ritually or spontaneously. We pray in church (celebrating the Eucharist), in our gardens, our cars, or while in the shower. We can also pray lying in bed, as the first thing we do when we awake, and as the last thing we do as we drift off to sleep. One of the characteristics of prayer we as Catholics believe is that with the right intention in every moment of the day—all our hopes, works, joys, and sufferings—can become our prayer. As Catholic Christians we pray in many different ways. Several times during the Evening of Reflection the necessity for prayer, by both the coordinator and the parish community was stressed, if Evangelization is going to work. Following our prayer experience, Evangelization input and best practices were shared.

Save the Date:

Alpha in a Catholic Context

Join parish leaders from around the Archdiocese on Saturday, October 21 from 9:00 AM to 3:00 PM at Ascension of Our Lord Catholic School (Don Bosco Hall-Auditorium) for the first Alpha Training in New Orleans. Alpha is a series of sessions exploring the Christian faith, typically run over eleven weeks. Each talk looks at a different question around faith and is designed to create conversation. Alpha is an inquiry process that has success around the US and around the globe, and everyone is welcome. Ascension of our Lord in LaPlace has invited others to gather with others for an interactive training to experience what it's like run an Alpha.  For more information, please visit: alphausa.org/runalphalaplace, or contact Mark Williams.
