Do not be afraid, little flock, for it is your Father's good pleasure
to give you the kingdom.

Music Maybe
By Christian Wiman

Too many elegies elevating sadness
to a kind of sad religion:

one wants in the end just once to befriend
one’s own loneliness,

to make of the ache of inwardness –

                    music maybe,

or even just believing in it,
and summer,

and the long room alone
where the child

chances on a bee
banging against the glass

like an attack of happiness.

Note - the office will be closed tomorrow, Friday, August 9.

  • The Forum:  9:00 a.m. in the Fireside Room. This week The Forum begins a four-week series exploring the history and structure of our liturgy. Where did The Book of Common Prayer come from? All are welcome to come with your questions and your curiosity!
August 11:  Rev. Claire will guide us through a brief history of our liturgy and The Book of Common Prayer.
August 18: Explore the structure and meanings of the Eucharist and our other sacraments.
August 25: DIrector of Music, Eric Tuan, will offer an engaging presentation on the history of Church music and the Anglican tradition.
September 1: Worship is constantly changing. Just last summer the General Convention approved the drafting of a new Book of Common Prayer. Where do we go from here?

One of the Social Justice Group's goals is to "Deepen the experience of Christ's love and inspiration in the life of volunteers from Christ Church, Ventana, and the other Compassion Week partner groups." All are welcome.
  • Monthly CSA Food Drive:  Donations can be dropped off at either service. CSA is in need of healthy and nutritious non-perishable items, including boxes of cereal, oatmeal, pop-top canned food items, flour, oil, condiments, salad dressings, etc. CSA no longer wants bulk packaged items that they have to divide out into individual packages. Please keep items to individual family sized packaging.
Statement from Bishops United Against Gun Violence
AUGUST 6, 2019—Since last weekend, three young white men—all American citizens, all in legal possession of assault rifles—have murdered more than 30 people in cold blood. Most of the precious children of God who are dead and injured are people of color.

When gun violence makes headlines, politicians supported by the National Rifle Association are quick to call white shooters “mentally ill,” while characterizing black and brown shooters as “criminals” and insisting that guns are not the problem. They choose to remain loyal to the gun lobby and its campaign contributions while denying the incontrovertible evidence that more guns mean more deaths. Read the full statement here.

Bishops United Against Gun Violence is a network of nearly 100 Episcopal Church bishops (including Diocese of California Bishop Marc Handley Andrus) working to curtail the epidemic of gun violence in the United States.

Parish Hall

Experience an ancient contemplative practice, the Labyrinth, through the lenses of meditation and music. As we move through a guided sequence of seated and walking meditations led by Rev. Claire and parishioner Alice Landis, enjoy a program of reflective music offered by Director of Music and pianist Eric Tuan and the vocal artists of Convivium. Nourish your ears and soul with the sinuous melodies of Gregorian chant and the mesmerizing harmonies of Arvo Pärt, John Cage, and Meredith Monk.

Sister Act Sing Along
In 1992's film Sister Act, Whoopi Goldberg plays a worldly singer who witnesses a mob crime. When a contract is put out on her life, the police hide her as a nun in a San Francisco convent where she has trouble fitting in. Upon learning of her music background, the choir nuns elect her to take over as choir director. Let's just say hilarity ensues! Even if you're not familiar with all the songs in the film, we'll run it with subtitles so that everyone can sing along. And who knows, maybe one of these songs will make it into Sunday's 10:15 a.m. service! Bring a dessert, bottle of wine, or non-alcoholic drink to share, and join us on Saturday, September 7, at 7:00 p.m. in the Parish Hall. Screening of the movie and singing will start at 7:30 p.m. Sister Act is rated PG for mild violence and language

2019 Christ Church Parish Survey
On Tuesday, we sent out short parish survey. It was sent from the same "This Week at CCLA" email system we use for this weekly newsletter. We have heard from a few parishioners that the survey email ended up in their Spam email folder. In case you didn't receive, or can't find, the survey email, here is a link to the survey. We hope to hear from you!

Look What We've Uncovered!
In further cleaning out of closets and boxes in the offices, we've found a few things that you may want to have. There is an assorted collection of old (or should we say vintage?) Christ Church t-shirts on a table in the Parish Hall. Help yourself when you are here on Sunday! We have three copies of A Dictionary for Episcopalians on the table in the church office. And finally a Pentax 8.0 Megapixels point and shoot digital camera with battery charger (contact Deanne in the office, or 650-948-2151). All items are first come, first served.

Lost and Found
A few clothing items have accumulated in the church office. We'll be using part of one of the coat racks in the Church Narthex to display these items in case one is something you've lost. Also a Honda car key and a pair of sunglasses were found sitting on the piano in the church. Contact Deanne if these are yours ( or 650-948-2151).

Federal Trade Commission on Gift Card Scam Targeting Worshipers
You may recall earlier this summer Rev. Claire sent out a notification that an email address attempting to look like it was coming from her had sent emails to several parishioners asking for Gift Card donations. Last week the FTC issued a Consumer Information bulletin on this scam including resources for reporting. Please be careful when responding to any urgent requests for money or other financial donations sent via email or text message, or even phone calls.

Lids from Plastic Bottles Can Be Art Instead of Landfill
Ventana is collecting plastic bottle lids of different sizes, shapes and colors to use as raw material for crafts and making murals. Consider collecting lids for the month of August and donating them to Ventana at the end of the month.

Emergency Call for Blood Donations Continues
While thousands of people from across the country responded to the emergency request for blood and platelet donations issued by the American Red Cross in early July, a critical blood shortage remains. Right now, the Red Cross has less than a five-day blood supply on hand. The Red Cross strives to have a five-day supply at all times to meet the needs of patients every day and be prepared for emergencies that may require significant volumes of donated blood products. Donors of all blood types are urgently needed to help restock the shelves. The Red Cross is thanking those who come in to donate blood or platelets between July 25 and August 31 by emailing them a $5 gift card claim code. For more information on blood donation and/or to final a local Red Cross donation site or blood drive, visit the American Red Cross Blood Services website.

Homestays for Red Priest - Three More Still Needed
To launch the 2019-2020 season of the Living Harmony Concert Series, the British Baroque quartet Red Priest will be performing at Christ Church on Sunday, September 29, at 7:30 p.m., and engaging in an outreach event with Ventana School on Monday, September 30. We are still looking for homestays for three of their instrumentalists for the nights of September 28, 29, and 30. Would you be willing to host one of the instrumentalists for these three nights? Your hospitality makes it possible for Christ Church to host these world-renowned artists and share their music with our community. Please email Director of Music, Eric Tuan (, if you are able to host. Many thanks for considering!

Reminder - Policy for Parishioner Expense Reimbursement
To help us manage expenses most efficiently, any expenses a parishioner would like to have reimbursed must be submitted within 60 days. In addition, to the extent smaller expenses (less then $25) can be held and submitted together, that would be greatly appreciated. Lastly, the church does have a credit card that Deanne can use to make purchase online or in person, and we regularly order all types of supplies from Staples (office, coffee hour, kitchen, etc.). Before you make a purchase, consider if it might be something we already have or something that Deanne can order or purchase (

Have an Announcement for the Thursday Newsletter or Sunday Herald?
Please submit items to Deanne ( by Tuesday, 12 noon, for that week's newsletter and Herald. Depending on timing of an event and content already submitted, we may decide to wait a week and would notify you if that were the case. We usually start publicizing events three weeks prior to the event.
